Hummingbird!

Yesterday I saw my first Ruby-throated Hummingbird that stayed around long enough for photos.  We've seen quite a few that dashed past, perhaps stopping for an instant, but none have stayed to feed, even though we had a Hummingbird feeder up for a couple of months.  But now that the first bloom on our Butterfly Bush has emerged, there it was, hovering up and down to visit for several minutes.

I grabbed for my phone pretty fast when it arrived, hoping I could get it set before it sped off.

But it hovered for a full minute or two, allowing me to get several photos.  These are the best of about 25 photos.

And that wasn't enough, it also stopped at the Hostta that's still in bloom to investigate several blossoms.

Mind you, along the way there were lots of photos like this or worse as it hid on the other side of the flower.  Rain this morning and thankfully it's a bit cooler than the sweltering heat of yesterday.

  1. They are so entertaining. I have youngsters at my feeders for the first time ever!!! Watching the mother show them which feeder to go to is something. She and the little ones are on the old TV antenna. She will fly in a pattern, then the youngsters take a turn repeating the dance. Then they go to the feeder.

  2. You managed to get some great shots of that Hummingbird. By coincidence my post today was on Hummers. That is a very different Butterfly Bush than any I've seen. So lovely. Do you know the name?

  5. He really was polite in hanging around. My hummers empty the feeder every other day! The buttefly bush is considered a non-natie invasive and thus not something we can have here.

  10. Well done! Lovely cheerful chair too. And I didn’t tell you the other day but I am so jealous of your hostas. Ours get eaten by slugs every year.

  18. Those are great Hummingbird phone photos. I've not had a lot of luck over the years here with attracting Hummingbirds. Tried different feeders, different formulas but no luck. And I haven't had a lot of luck with Hummingbird flower bushes either. It might be our acidic soil from all the pine trees. Keep those Hummers coming............
