Winter Barns

Remember that bright sunny winter day nearly a week ago?  I've already shared several pictures from that day of Georgian Bay and frosty trees, but I also captured a few barns as I drove between here and Thornbury.  Always looking for more blog photos....

This farm no longer has a house, but is rented by the farmer across the road.  But the barn is still in use; he keeps cattle there.  I've looked for a good viewpoint, and finally found this winter gap between the trees, and on a sunny day too.

I've posted pictures of this one before, but from quite a different angle.  Still quite an active farm, cash crops I think.  I'm finding that I like these more distant views of barns which show the landscape, as well as the close-ups.

This is further north on the road to Meaford,  I like the roofline of tis one.

As I drive around in the corners that have better farmland, I often find two or three farms showing up at once across the landscape.

All the above barns are in active use and being well maintained, but this one obviously isn't.  I don't think it has long to last!

Thanks for all your comments on yesterday's 1000th post!  Tonight we're in the middle of a winter storm.  The temperature started to rise Friday, a lot of our little bit of snow melted, and last night it rained heavily overnight.  We woke to rain, but as we drove home from church, it transformed into snow as the cold front moved through, light at first, then heavy and swirling around in the wind.  We've actually only had a little snow (though that's much better than rain!), but now northwest squalls are developing off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, and overnight we've got 10-20 cm. in the forecast.  Along with temperatures well below freezing and more snowflurries for the week, maybe we're finally going to get real winter.

Almost forgot, I failed to make my hour/day walking this week.  Only 6.5 hours, what with the rain and the snowstorm today.

  1. Those barn and sky pictures look cold but pretty. That last barn is, as you say, on its last legs. :-)

  2. Thanks so much for sharing these "winter barns." Lately my barns set in a winter wonderland come from my archive. This sure is one strange winter. I hope that you continue to find such wonderful barns and will return again.

  5. All your pictures are always well composed and look great. I never tire of them.
This is not a joke but it makes the perfect excuse for not getting your weekly walking in. On the Weather Network on Saturday they were showing that this present storm is actually the result of a high level Low Pressure system that originated from the North Pole. Any excuse is better than none right? LOL!
    Be safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  6. Love the long views of the farms and barns. It is nice to have barns well kept - the last one does look like it is on its last legs. I'd love to see the barn views between the trees in the summer when the trees are leafed out.

  7. Love the landscape view of the barns. I am learning that sometimes the picture is better because of the long distance. The trees make nice frams.

  11. Wonderful photos . I was raised on a farm and still would love to live on a farm I miss the barns and animals but farming now a days is harder then people think or know not like it was back in the day !. I would however would like a hobby farm . We have a large Amish community down here and I love their farms . Yes our weekend started with rain and mild temps then yesterday afternoon the winds picked up temps dropped and snow flew in our first snow storm of the season although just enough to cover the grass still with snow it is still a pretty winter wonderland that gives me a new canvas to play with lol ! Thanks for sharing , Have a good day !

  13. I love your barn post- and the snow just makes them more lovely to me. The last one does indeed look to be on it's last leg, but also has probably served it's owner well over the years. Have a good day..not too cold!

  14. Great barn photos. I'd guess that last one will be used for something artistic at some point. It needs to be taken down piece by piece to retain the weathered wood.

  15. Beautifully picturesque!

We had some of the rain, but not enough to make a dent in the snowpack, and there's been a flash freeze here in the night.

  16. Congrats on #1001! I especially like the photo of the barn framed by the two trees. Those old deteriorating barns are particularly interesting and beautiful.
