Canada Geese on the Bay

I stopped by the mouth of the Beaver River in Thornbury last week when I was passing, where it runs out into Georgian Bay, and was surprised to find some gentle waves rolling in, bumping up against the current coming down the river.  And at the confluence, a flock of Canada Geese.

It hadn't seemed like a windy day particularly, but the waves were rolling in.  The river was flowing very full and fast, and I almost thought the waves were more from the meeting of the currents than any actual wind.

As I stood there a long line of Canada Geese floated down the river beside me.  And then I spotted (or heard), the small flock flying in on the left to join them - you can hardly see them.

I was standing there ready with my camera, so I quickly snapped off a dozen pictures as the geese swooped around in an almost complete circle, and came in for a landing.  Run down these few pictures quickly, and maybe you'll be able to hear the flock circling down til they landed.

Then I left them to enjoy the frigid water, and headed home.

  1. As long as they've got some open water, they're happy. Not all of them fly south.

  2. Nice photos of the geese. I love to watch them flying around too. Sometimes they get low and it's neat to hear their wings.

  6. You can't go anywhere in Southern Ontario without seeing Canada Geese. They seem to have adapted very well to living next to humans.
