A Few Barns

These pictures were taken before Christmas, so they certainly don't look like they would today - we've now got about 8-10" of snow, but they're still nice barns.

This is a barn once owned by an old family friend, and I was actually inside it once, about 25 years ago!  I like the odd angle to the roofline.

A broader view shows how it's nestled just south of Old Baldy, in the valley.  This was one of those days with a micro-climatic difference between the valley temperature and the landscape above - see the snow around the top of Old Baldy?  There was snow at our house, but no snow in the valley that day.

This is just down the road from our house, and sits quite close to the Bruce Trail.  In fact, the back part of the farm was sold to the Bruce Trail Conservancy several years ago, and this is where I am the Land Steward.  I'd like to know more about the history of this one.

This barn has been redone recently, with all new siding and a new roof - but I don't know what it's being used for, certainly not farming.
On the other hand, this farm just down the road sold to a new farmer just last year, and the old worn barn has been thoroughly redone.  It's now a large driveshed for a cash crop farmer.

This is a barn you don't see well most of the year, but I noticed driving by that it was quite visible from this spot on the road at this time of year.  Not sure what it's in use for, but those 4 little new windows are intriguing, as are the two shed rooflines on each side of the barn.

Today it snowed again most of the day, giving us another 3-4 inches.  The world really does look white now.  So there was 2-3 hours of snowblowing in late afternoon to keep the place relatively tidy.  I bought a new small electric blower just to do our deck and back sidewalk.  Used it for the first time and it works great.  At the same time I was in and out trying to load Windows 10 on my laptop.  I think that much happened successfully, but now I don't know how to browse the internet!  Always some little challenges with computers!  I think I did figure out the question I had about Lightroom yesterday; thanks for the suggestions.

  1. I may awake to snow tomorrow, will have to wait and see. The first picture is much like many barns in this area, a lean to is often added to the main barn foe more space. Happy Barn Hunting in 2016.

  2. I take it your snowblowing took the place of a walk? Just trying to keep you on the straight and narrow! :-)

    1. Thanks for reminding me, it's time for my weekly report! No the snowblowing didn't count (my big snowblower i get to ride). And i did manage to average just over one hour per day all week, though i had to resort to the stationary bike twice to get enough minutes.

  4. glad Lightroom is going OK, and your barns. they are so lived in!! I could happily be in any one, with adequate heating and room to spread the sewing around. Windows 10, did you do a totally clean install, or do it over the top of what you are running already?

  7. Always enjoyable to see the old barns. Great pictures. The silo on that one is just about to crumble.

  13. I am so fascinated by these old abandoned silos. They are so interesting. So many openings. So much snow you are having. we have had a smash of it but that is all. There is something about an old unpainted barn that really draws me in. Such a nice collection.
