In Bloom Just Now

Although it's been a dry July and we're now well into August, the blooms in our garden continue unabated.  Day Lilies above all, but some bright Canna Lilies as well, a few Dahlias, and our tiny little Bear's Breeches.

The Day Lilies amaze me.  How a plant can continue to find the energy to put out a large beautiful colourful flower day after day. I just don't know.  They seem to be one of the most successful of garden plants to me.

The Canna Lilies take a long time to get to this stage, but they certainly sport some bright blooms once they get here.  We have red, pink and yellow ones this year.

The Dahlias we have are fairly small and simple compared to some of the sumptuous flowers you see on other varieties, but they're bright and pretty never-the-less.  The roots need to be stored indoors over our winters.

Here's our tiny Bear's Breeches, an orphan from a plant we gave to friends before we moved.  But it's surviving and doing well.  This will get 3 feet wide, with several spikes of flowers 4 feet high in a few years.  It's a very spiky plant, with leaves that are almost thistle-like.  Certainly will add some interest to the garden.

Raining here this morning, thank goodness, and Mrs. F.G. is making Black Currant jam.  They're hard to come by and expensive, but we found a local source, so perhaps I'll be the beneficiary of this every year!  I'll let you know how it tastes.

  1. those colours, nature gives us a beautiful palette. The black currants, my Dad had the most prolific orchard on the farm where I grew up, and there were red currants, green gooseberries, cape gooseberries, and passionfruit galore.I wonder where all those fruit trees and shrubs went.We have rain too, and I see from another blog that your rain is so welcome.

  4. Your flower photos are all so great. I like the colors of the blooms. My canna was planted early in the season and it still sits without any blooms.

  5. Your flowers are beautiful. I can't get canna lilies to come into bloom. It's just too short of a growing season in my part of the Ottawa Valley. Love black current anything. I found one jar at a farmers market. It was expensive as all get out (one of only two she made) but what a rare treat.

  8. Your flowers are gorgeous and you capture their beauty in your pictures. I love Canna lilies and used to have them in Rodney. Now I have dahlias for the first time and can't wait for them to bloom! :)

  9. Amazing flowers, FG. The only ones I recognised were the dahlias - we have some sorry-looking examples in our little patch. Please save me some blackcurrant jam...
