A Monarch - At Last!

I finally had a chance to photograph a Monarch that sat still for a second or two!  We've seen several fluttering by, in various locations, but this one was visiting the False Sunflowers in our own garden.

These are heavily cropped, so somehow my camera lens did a great job of focussing.

A couple of weeks ago I spotted an Orange Sulphur, which fluttered around my feet, stopping to sit on the gravel (and perhaps absorb some minerals?) on the new driveway next door.  It was more yellow than the typical Orange Sulphur, but that's by far the most common butterfly among the Sulphurs here in Ontario, so I'm sure that's what it is.  It's just a very yellow Orange Sulphur!

We've had quite a few Northern Pearly-Eyes too.  They usually flutter around in the shade, and I've noticed two of them landing repeatedly on a spot on our old apple tree where some sap is seeping out.  I've seen them on various leaves, but never on a flower.

I'm sick and tired of sorting boxes as we try to downsize and get rid of things before our move.  I didn't realize I was such a packrat!  I've got things saved all the way back to my childhood.  And it's not a simple matter of keep or throw.  You've no idea how hard it is to get rid of stuff!  Things are going about ten directions - to our kids, to charities, to used bookstores, to church sales, to friends, to the dump.  It never ends!  I will be SO glad when this is all over!

We interrupted three Turkey Vultures at their dinner tonight, on our drive home from Meaford.  Not really clear because I shot these through the windshield, but a good look at the local road clean-up crew.

  1. At least moving provides some urgency to part with things. we are not moving but we know that we have to downsize. It's hard.

  2. Love the Monarch photos so nice that you could finally get one in focus. Purging is a big chore but feel so good once it is done, we know from experience.

  3. We've begun to get rid of stuff we've accumulated after 46 years in our house so the kids don't have to deal with it when we're gone -- but they'll still have to deal with some of our "treasures".

  4. Last year there was all kinds of Monarchs going through here...and even the year before. This year I have hardly seen any, and for sure not any to photograph. That Northern Pearly Eyes is beautiful, too...I don't think I have ever seen one.

  5. Clouded Sulphur is the most common sulphur around here.

  6. Now Monarchs I recognize but the others, not so much. Nice pictures FG.
Purging, ah yes, I remember it well. I actually enjoyed the experience and found it easier as we went along. It was purge or bust for us and the only way to follow our dream of fulltiming.

  7. Beautiful butterfly and moths. And it's always hard to move, especially to downsize. Glad to know you're making progress, though. :-)

  8. Great butterfly captures, FG. I find them so difficult to photograph. The turkey vultures have such tiny heads.

  10. Great shots of the butterflies!!
I've started the going through things too!! Not too bad this time for us though because we've only been in this house for 4 years and did that before we moved here.

  11. Hello, lovely captures of the butterflies. The Monarch is a beauty and the Pearly-eyes is a new one for me. The road crew looks busy cleaning up the roads. It is amazing how much stuff we can collect over the years. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!

  12. Lucky you to get the butterfly shots. I've managed 1 shot of a butterfly all summer long. - I can't even imagine trying to move and sort through our stuff. I don't envy you but hope you get things moved and settled into normal life soon.

I photographed two Turkey Vultures on my way home after lunch today. They were busily working on cleaning up, too!
