A Day Lily Garden

We had the chance to visit a private (and spectacular) Day Lily garden recently.  It gave us several ideas for our own new garden, and we had a nice visit with the owners.  There were Day Lilies everywhere!

Hours and hours of dead-heading go into making a Day Lily look at its best.  I have to admit that we're not very good at that.  There were a number of mulched pathways through the garden to walk on.

And very little grass, just a small patch in the middle.  This is sort of what we're hoping for with our new garden - but one tenth this size!

The sheds aren't merely functional, they're an interesting feature in the garden.

Along with a few sculptures, like this blue-bottle cluster.

One idea we liked and might adapt was this display of small Hostas, on one their own steps at one end of the deck.  We have some interesting small Hostas we don't want to leave behind, so this might just work.

As an undergardener with many years of experience, I was pleased to see that they still had a proper works yard in the back corner.  All that beauty comes at a price - hours in the garden, and aching bones!

We came home inspired to think about what we can do with our tiny little new space next year.

  5. One on its own, and three of a kind, spectacular. And no matter what size a garden is, it always need a working place.( hidden to the public maybe)

  6. The garden is much like others I have seen here but the flowers are different. Is that a cemetery I see in the distance?

  7. Eye-popping! Every time I see a nice garden it fills me with ideas - till I see another one! As a result I have a hotch-potch of half-formulated ideas and mislaid plans.
