Lichens

I'm jumping around here a bit, but mother nature has been jumping around with the weather she's giving us!  These pictures of lichens on the big boulders in our fencerow were taken only 4 days ago, at the end of our early spring melt.  Now they're all covered up with snow again!

There are quite a lot of big lichen and moss-covered boulders in our old fencerow.  Some of them are so big I don't know how they moved them, even with a team of big workhorses!

When you take a close look, I'm fascinated with the textures, colours and shape of these tiny fruiting bodies of the lichens.  Unfortunately I've always found them very difficult to identify.

  2. Lichens give rock such character! We rarely look closely at them however. Great job.

  15. Very nice photos of the lichens. You might want to find a copy of "Lichens of the North Woods" by Joe Walewski, a small field guide to lichens. You're closer to the specific area the book covers, but it's been a big help in identifying lichens in my area of Pennsylvania.
