Snow in May!

Well, guess what we woke up to this morning!  Yes, it was about an inch of the white stuff.

I had a bunch of close-ups of flowers, ferns and leaves emerging in our very green garden picked out to share with you.  What you're going to get instead is several pairs of photos - from yesterday, and then today.  I tried to match them up as best I could, but since the plants were half buried under the snow this morning, it was a bit tricky.  Still, they all illustrate our fickle spring weather!!

Cinnamon Fern fronds.

Sugar Maple seedling leaves unfolding.

Forget-me-nots on our railway tie retaining wall.

Close-ups.

A Woodfern.

And just some Silver Maple leaves against the background of the house.  Of course all the snow is gone now, 10 hours later (it was mostly gone by noon), and we're supposed to get a decent sunny week, even if not really warm yet.  Meanwhile, I'll be mowing the lawn tomorrow, which has grown about 6" after Saturday's rain and today's snow - but it has to dry out first.

  1. We had no snow here in the city but we had several periods of ice pellets that were coming down almost horizontally! It has been a crazy day! I hope all your plants survive!

  10. Great comparison shots--I love them! The latest snow I remember from the Chicago area is March or April. That makes for a long winter for you.

  15. This weather truly, truly sucks. The leaves are barely on the trees and in about another four months they will be starting to drop. Years ago I had a chance to move to the south of France. I could have been checking my fig trees now........

  21. in response to your comment about my duck problem, how wonderful of you to , take time to research this for me. we installed fountains, that sprayed the entire surface of the water constantly. we ran our pool clearer with it's water shooting tail 24/7. we bought blow ups of every kind and nothing, so far, has deterred the ducks. our "pool people" say it is a phenomena, that these tactics usually work. i am NOT going to tell you what i saw them doing with the huge blow up swan, it's x-rated!!! we did have a blow up whale also. he did not interest them nor scare them!!! they even used the pool while we were swimming in it. they controlled the deep end, if we choose to stay, we were "allowed" in the shallow end. true story!!

  22. What a contrast between spring and snow! We didn't get the snow- aside from some flakes- but we've had cool temperatures yesterday and today.

  23. As I recall from my days in the northern states, the plants will survive a bit of snow. But really? It's May!

  26. Oh my. You did get snow. Must be the same system that came through NB yesterday. Thankfully it was only wet snow here. I like the before and after photos and the one of the forget-me-nots in snow is really pretty.

  27. Great idea to do comparison photos FG. I heard the grumbling about snow down south while we were in Tobermory over the weekend but had no idea that much had fallen. It snowed on our way up Saturday and there were sprinkles here and there a few times after but no where near what you got.
