Winter Solstice - Yeah!

Today is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, though because the actual solstice occurs here tonight at 11.47, tomorrow is only 1 second (approximately) longer.  But from here on until late June, the days get longer!  It will take a week or two for me to notice, but it will quickly make a difference for me never-the-less.  I find the long dark days worse than the cold and snow (if we ever actually get any this year!).

I went for a drive yesterday, just to capture the little bit of white stuff we got for you to enjoy.  I wouldn't want to to miss the only snowfall we've had in December!  I've shared this favourite view looking north from Bowles Hill several times, Old Baldy the tall cliffs in the distance.

And Old Baldy itself, from just north of the village of Kimberley.

I"ve always like this little barn as you drive north, and never seen any sign of use, though it's always been kept up well.  Looks like there's some work going on here now though.

It's a perfect time of year to get pictures of some buildings that are often hidden behind leaves in the summer.  This is an old schoolhouse, for many years now a residence.  I like the architecture.

Here's another view that wouldn't be the same with the leaves on the trees.  This is a big barn set back in from the road, but I liked how the composition turned out with the fence in front and the tree overhead.

And one more barn looking north from Bowles Hill, a slightly different view than the first one.  I believe that this was the actual old Bowles family's barn.

Today has been about the wettest, dreariest, shortest grey day of the month.  Yes, I can say shortest, 'cause tomorrow the days start getting longer.  The rain kept me indoors almost all day, but when it stopped at 5 p.m., when it was almost dark, I did drag the dog out for a walk.  Today was 'clean the house day' before our kids and grandchildren arrive for the holidays; I'm all pooped out.

  1. Well, about 30 minutes or so ago, our Summer Solstice occurred. This brings me to the realisation, that slowly, from now on, sunshine hours will start to decrease. And here you are, as is everyone in the North, that your winter daylight hours are going to show more sunshine.Enjoy, as we graduate into the final summer countdown.Love those photos, my choice is the barn, a broken fence, and a bare tree. Perfect composition.

  3. At this time of year it's easy to understand why the ancient folks need reassurance that the days would get longer and warmer and that green plants would return.

The split-rail fence, gnarly maple and the big old barn make the nest-to-last photo my favorite, but the old school is a beauty also.

  4. We had a gray dark day here too. I will be glad to see the day light hours getting longer. Will be nice when I can start my walk in the daylight!
Pretty pictures. Looks like a sprinkling of confectioners sugar over everything.

  6. Oh how I dreaded those wet, dreary, short grey days years ago & probably will again some day. And that damp cold that just goes right through a person. The weather is sounding very Novemberesque back up Ontario way.

  7. Use that extra second well! What's that white stuff lying on the ground?

  8. Wonderful scenery - and I too like the old schoolhouse. We have had seemingly endless rain in our part of the UK - the recent pretty pictures shown were taken earlier in the year. Thanks for the amazing posts you have shared this year. And thanks for popping across to my blog as you do. All the best of everything to you and your family for Christmas and the new year ahead.

  10. Thanks for sharing you winter solstice scenes. The one field looks like a patch work quilt. I hope that you will have more to share from the valley soon.
