Signs of Fall

There are lots of signs of fall around.  In fact, I'm having a hard time drawing a line between late summer and early fall.  Here are a few of the seasonal signs I'm noticing in the first week of September.

About the very last flowers to start blooming in the garden have burst into blossom - the Fall Anemones.

There are squirrels in the oak trees across the road, chewing on acorns as fast as they can go.  Half of them fall to the ground still intact, the ground is littered with them.  Must be clumsy squirrels.

And of course there are lots of leaves just starting to turn colour - though most of the world here still looks remarkably green.  This is a cherry leaf on a sapling in our meadow.

About the last wildflowers ('weeds') to bloom in the meadow, the New England Asters, now flash their purple colour along the trails.

The sporangia (spore cases) on the back of the fern leaves are really obvious.  This is a Male Fern.

There are dozens of formerly blooming meadow flowers that are now brown clusters of tiny seeds ready for dispersal - this is a dried Elecampane blossom.

And of course it's tomato season - until the first frost.  I could eat toasted tomato sandwiches for dinner for at least a month!

  1. Even though we are behind you this far south, but we are having some signs of Fall here also... We took a Day Trip on Friday --and I took pictures of some of the trees trying to turn. BUT--we still have lots and lots of wildflowers blooming. I'll do a blog on that soon.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  2. I've been seeing some fall colours here and there already in late August, so it's to be expected others are seeing that as well.

  3. Yeah, some of our trees are already beginning to drop leaves. But I'm so ready for fall! We've had a really hot and dry summer here, and I'm looking forward to cooler temps and rain.

  7. My own outdoor tomatoes are done for after a week of cool, very wet weather - blight, I'm afraid. Never mind the plants in the greenhouse are producing loads of fruit so I'll not starve! September is often a better month than August in this part of the world. The older I get the less I believe in the myth of seasons.

  9. Fall is definitely on it's way, but the warm weather is definitely blurring the lines between the two seasons. (I'm in Ontario, too) Beautiful shots!

  10. Fall is in the air. I've only seen a bit of fall colour so far, though.

Now I want a toasted tomato sandwich for breakfast. ;)

  12. Great series of photos. Summer here has been delightful. No AC needed. I'm enjoying it so much I'm not quite ready for Fall yet. : )
