It's been a busy week here! Relatives visiting, renovated bathroom inching toward being finished and on Thursday the arborists arrived to do some serious tree trimming. We planned to trim some bigger branches, but they convinced us to take out three of the ash trees which are all predicted to die from the Emerald Ash Borer in the next few years anyway.
They sure knew what they were doing, and the two qualified arborists soon disappeared up into the tops of trees to tackle some branches.
After they discovered that this tree was hollow and cracked most of the way up, (all on the other side so we couldn't see it) we decided to take it down and they prepared to climb up and cut it from the top down.
The climbing boots have been put on, the climbing belt looped around the tree, and now the chain saw goes on the belt,
The hand saw is carried in a holster on the lower leg,
And anything else he might need is on his belt.
And then he just walked up the tree with those spiked boots on.

Today we're headed off for a relaxing drive after the busy week.
You got your own logger sports even right at home. It's hard to lose such big trees, but taking them down before they become danger trees was best. - Margy

Co-incidentally I was watching two workers carrying out much the same operation in a garden near me just two days ago. Not the way I'd choose to make a living.
ReplyDeleteWe had an arborist carry out tree felling similar to that. He swung from one tree to the other, and selectively lopped off branches with the chainsaw as he descended. Dangerous, skilled work, and for your trees, the right time before they snap and fall.Such a lot of leaves, they might become wonderful mulch.

ReplyDeleteOnly about one percent of ash trees are expected to survive the emerald ash borer, the problem is that there's no way to predict which ones that might be. We took ours down a few years ago -- pretty good firewood now.

ReplyDeleteWow, that sounds and looks like a huge job. I guess it is the safer than sorry approach. It sure is going to look and feel different in that area. Things change when there is not shade in an area that previously had it.

ReplyDeleteThose fellas sure have to be in good shape for that kind of work and talk about nerves of steel. It's the way trees were done before the invention of long boom arms mounted on trucks. I've watched them do trees here in our park with the big booms but have never seen a fella scramble up a tree to do it. Knew about it but never seen it.
