Monarch!
I saw a Monarch up close today, my first of the year, although I'm sure we've seen some fluttering by as we drive around. Monarchs have become a symbol of ecological health here, and I always watch out for them every year.
Here it is, feeding on a Milkweed flower. There are only two places I can get to in my chair that feature a few beautiful wildflowers (weeds) growing up at this time of year. Today I went around the block where there's a 100' stretch of tall grasses and Wild Chervil, along with some Milkweed and Chicory. I said to myself "I'll stop by and get some pictures on my way back".
So I did, and there was a Monarch fluttering around the patch of Milkweed. It seemed more happy fluttering than landing and sitting still, so I thought this was the best photo I'd get.
The Milkweeds were about half out in bloom, and looking beautiful.
We heard a talk about Monarch migration at the museum last spring, and I learned a lot. Apparently Monarchs take 3 or 4 generations to migrate back to southern Ontario from their main over-wintering site in Mexico, so the Monarchs we see now are probably 4th generation. However Monarchs hatched here in the summer can normally reach Mexico in one annual migration.

Beautiful captures! Monarch visits to our garden this year have been very light.
ReplyDeleteYou could put some milkweed in your garden and attract monarchs to your yard. We have some in the yard and they attract many different species of insects -- the only problem is that milkweed spreads from root sprouts so it's moving into the lawn (but the mower takes care of that).
ReplyDeleteThe monarch population seems to have rebounded nicely. My precious milkweed garden is full of them, and the caterpillars!!!

ReplyDeleteGreat closeups. We have Swallowtails and Mourning Cloaks, but I don't think I've seen a Monarch here on the coast. I'll have to watch closer. - Margy

ReplyDeleteSo that's why I couldn't find any Monarchs around the Park's pond yesterday. They had all flown up to your area to say hello and pose for the Furry Gnome. Great photos and I'm always impressed with the quality of photos those smart phones take. It's good you have a few accessible places where you can get up close to nature.
