But Georgian Bay is one of the most beautiful of them all in my opinion, especially for its shoreline further north - rivalled only by Lake Superior.
I was in Meaford today for a meeting and dropped down to the harbour afterwards to take some pictures. I've posted some brilliant blue summer pictures of the bay before, but this is a much more typical winter view - gray and slightly menacing.
Meaford is a popular sailing harbour, but all the boats are long since out of the water to protect them from the ice, and sitting in wait for next spring. The winter wind was howling while I was there, and all the cables on these boats were snapping and clanging in the breeze.
It's not entirely a recreational harbour; this looked like an old fishing tug on the left, and the Canadian Coast Guard's 'Westport' was up on the dock also waiting for the next season. I didn't know there was a Coast Guard station here until I saw EGCameraGirl's post a week ago - though her picture is taken earlier in the season and is of a different boat.
The whole harbour is behind huge stone breakwaters (seen in the background here) to protect the boats from occasional storms rolling in off the bay, . I liked this composition with the old ship's anchor in the foreground and the small lighthouse in the back. There's a huge history of shipping on Georgian Bay, like all the Great Lakes, including many shipwrecks over the past century and a half..
The sun peaked out behind the gray clouds for a few moments and the snow gusts abated long enough for me to get this closer picture of the light. Boaters have to be careful to follow the right channel leaving and entering this harbour.
A final nice view of the light with a patch of blue sky over the bay (which quickly disappeared in favour of high winds and gusty blowing snow for my drive home).

Looks chilly! I really like your photo of the anchor with lighthouse in background too.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful captures, and it does look SO cold!! I love the water!! Thanks for sharing! Have a great week!!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty!! The first one looks very cold too.
ReplyDeleteVery nice images of your snow!! The anchor images is my favorite, such a pretty one!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks really beautiful there along the harbour even on a cold and blustery day.
ReplyDeleteLooks lovely and cold!
ReplyDeleteGeorgian Bay, beautiful in any season!
ReplyDeleteIt does look cold but peaceful and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSome lovely views today. It sure does look cold.
ReplyDeleteIt looks so very much like my Lake Michigan world!
ReplyDeleteI live close to Lake Michigan, so I know that cold, gray look. But, you somehow have taken some lovely pictures that play on the gray and make it look inviting. Always love to see a light house. We have some historic light houses near here in Wisconsin. Beautiful post and full on interesting information ... Thank you.

Beautiful wintery lake scenes. I think I would like to visit in the summer!
ReplyDeleteMarvelous pictures of the bay and your explanations are very good.I find not many people know about Georgian Bay unless they live not far from it.
ReplyDeleteLovely bay and village photos ~ looks a bit like New England's eastern shore ~ thanks, carol, xxx
ReplyDeleteGreat to learn about Georgian Bay, from a fellow Great Laker. We call the north shore of Lake Superior in MN our home range.. were just down to Canal Park in Duluth yesterday. Duluth is currently looking like the North Pole! Hit with a lot of snow & wind last week.
ReplyDeleteWe were just thru Meaford to Thornbury last night, passing the Bay I was thinking how bitter cold and uninviting it looked. Hopefully when we are back thru Saturday the sun will be shining.
ReplyDeleteAH! Meaford is one of my favourite places to look out at Georgian Bay. The bay is definitely less menacing looking when the sun is out.
ReplyDeleteHi there, I've read about the Georgian Bay. Gorgeous lake --and I'll bet that Meaford is a really great little harbor city… Great set of photos!!!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas.
Hugs
Betsy
I've only seen Lake Michigan and Lake Erie. I was absolutely amazed by Lake Michigan. So blue. I grew up on the Jersey shore so nothing prepared me for the blueness of the water.
