When we left Conn last week we had an interesting drive home.  We didn't stop very much for more pictures of plants, but this was when we saw the beaver dam, a flock of Vultures in a field, and those Scottish Shorthorns.

Right across the road from Misty Meadows we were surprised by the appearance of this barn.  all the area had been tidied up and nice flowers, Echinacea I believe, were planted all around this side.

Before long we were driving under the big triple high voltage hydro lines going from the Bruce Nuclear plant to Toronto.  They cut across the countryside on an angle, so you meet them again on many of the different roads we travel south or southwest.

There's been significant new or re-investment in barns in some areas we pass, particularly in the area south of Hopeville.  This new barn and these silos went up just north of what I call 'spilled apple corner'.  I was driving by here years ago just after a truck went over and spilled its load of apples across the ditch and I've remembered that ever since.

Some big new farm equipment in that area too!

This herd of goats is not new, we often see them out in their rough pasture when we drive by.  Goats will eat anything!

This is just a small portion of a flock (a 'wake') of Turkey Vultures we saw in a field.  I have no idea what they were feeding on, because I thought they only ate carrion.  So I looked it up and it turns out I was wrong.  They will eat grass and other plants which actually form a good portion of their diet.

As we got closer to home, driving up the 7th Line, we passed the herd of Sottish Shorthorns.  They were all curious and turned to look at us slowing down.

This farm has the enormous barn where the new owner jacked up one end and poured new cement walls.  I was afraid he was going to tear it down so I stopped and asked hin if I could take a few pictures at the time.  That's how I know these are Scottish Shorthorns, a very unusual breed to find here.

This is that barn propped up and waiting for its new foundation walls.  Looked like a potentially catastrophic situation to me.

And just up the road we found a field of Sunflowers, less than a mile from our previous home!!

Just south of Rocklyn we saw a flock of Canada Geese far to the west.  We slowed down and watched, and they flew right in front of us, low over the road.  Then they set their wings and glided the last 200 yards, presumably to a recently harvested field of grain where they could feed.  Young are grown at this time of year and they gather together for a month of feeding before migrating.  Just one of the sights of fall.

  1. I wouldn't want to stand under the propped up part of that barn. I hope putting the new foundation in works out( with no mishaps)for the farmer.

  2. That barn foundation does look a bit spooky. It is always thrilling to watch geese in flight.

  7. Two very different barns here, one nicer than some houses, the other on scary stilts. It was a lovely drive!

  8. This is a great series of photos. Love the barns. So glad the owners did a foundation instead of tearing that second one down.

  10. Always something interesting along the road for those who look. Amazing that the old barn stood up to such treatment when it looks as though it might collapse if someone leant against it.

  11. Those are quite the props under that barn -- hope a bird didn't land on the roof, that might have been enough to bring the structure down.

  14. This was a great road tour. The barns look a lot like the barns in Iowa. It is good that guy leveled the barn as it would just collapse bringing the whole thing down.
