Another Snow Day!

The snow started before we woke up, and continues still this evening.  Twice one of those lake-effect streamers of heavy snow parked itself over us, and dumped a lot of inches fast.  I spent more hours than I'd like pushing snow off the deck, and snowblowing the driveway, in the swirling wind!

It's that dark green streamer passing overhead, then east to Barrie and on toward Peterborough that dumped the most snow.  I find this radar map on the Environment Canada weather site to be both really useful and accurate.  I use it year-round to check what weather is actually approaching.

I know you like pictures of those bright sunny days, but I don't want you to get an unrealistic vision of what winter is here.  So I've paired up some pictures from that sunny Sunday 3 days ago, with today's blowing snow, for your viewing pleasure.

Not a good day for driving here, several highways closed, and lots of local roads impassible.  Haven't seen a snow plow all day; they're busy on more important roads!

After spending several hours in the above freezing temperatures yesterday clearing at least some of our back deck off, I had to do it all again today to get rid of the 8 or 10" of light fluff that accumulated on top.  I'll probably have to do the same thing tomorrow morning again.

I finally went out and snowblowed the driveway even though it was still snowing, because I was afraid it would get too deep for my snowblower to handle.  It was drifting quite a bit in the wind, and I could hardly see what I was doing in the swirling snow.

Snow on our upper roof slid slowly off the edge yesterday, until it was a 6" thick curved curtain of snow, but this part never did break off and fall.  I'm sure it will come down some day soon.

In the meantime it's making the sewing studio very dark, hanging almost to the bottom of the window.  Those are two of Mrs. F.G.'s dolls guarding the window.

I enjoy winter, but I have to admit that I don't like being stuck at home all day and I'm getting tired of blowing snow!

  1. Beautiful, even that overhanging layer!

We started getting this in the afternoon, aside from the slushiness that was out there because of yesterday's weather. Temps are supposed to plummet overnight. At one point I was out and it was very difficult to see because of the snow.

  2. After a few days like you've had, I feel trapped. We've had rain and high winds. At least we don't have to shovel rain but we've had lots of damage.

  4. I Like the name of your blog. I'm only 5'4" & as my beard gets longer from it's last short trim I'm slowly turning into a furry gnome myself.

  6. How beautiful! I really love that last shot, too! We didn't have any snow on the ground, so the huge flakes falling this morning are a welcome change! I love winter...especially snowy winters! I asked you to send me some, so thank you! haha....

  7. You are reminding me of the years I lived in Michigan and the first snow of the season was still on the ground by the January thaw. I like the Pacific Northwest way better. :-)

  8. Winter has hit with a vengeance where you live! I'm sure you're getting sick of all the shoveling but it sure is pretty.

  9. We all need a doll or two to keep watch. Snow, I still think it is magical, but have not lived where we would have anything near what you get there. Guess the novelty of using a shovel and snow blower would wear a little thin by the end of winter. Lovely scenes, and it gives a wonderful view of how it really is.

  10. Random thoughts here: I, too, loved seeing the dolls watching at the window. That "curtain" of beautifully lit snow hanging over the roof edge is magnificent against the green-blue backdrop of the house. Wonderful contrasts of clear sunshine and gorgeous shadow patterns in the snow with the hazier shots of windblown snow softening the outlines of trees, fences, cottage. So glad you have a snow blower, but even at that, empathize with your feeling of entrapment due to poor driving conditions. Hope your health and that of your loved ones has been good. Wishing all of you the very best in 2017. So appreciated your message on my blog. Many thanks!! Very interested to hear of the BC connection!

  12. It looks so much colder without the sun!!
It's snowing here now, but I think just a few inches.
Always enjoy your beautiful snowy pictures.

  13. We didn't get nearly that much snow. You took it all! I love shovelling, really. The sun coming out was amazing, wasn't it?!

  14. Your photos of the falling snow are, to me, just as beautiful as those of the bright sunny day. I've always found it easier not to wait until the snow stops but to clear the driveway when there's no more than 6 or 8 inches of snow and then keep at it.

  15. I like the ones with bright sunshine, but I LOVE the ones with blowing snow. They are the ones that call to my heart.
