Late Fall in the Valley

After my adventure in Niagara, it's time to get back to 'seasons in the valley', as it's now late fall.  The Sugar Maples and White Ash have dropped their leaves, and the forests and fields look bare, but for a final flush of yellow.  The White Birch, the Poplars, and the Tamarack are the last trees to turn yellow and then it's good-bye to fall.

This Silver Maple is right outside our living room window.

The meadow in the back yard has turned to brown, the gardens are put to bed, and the Tamarack offer a bit of yellow in the far corner.

Driving through the valley the forests are bare.

The White Birch (these two in our own yard), have turned yellow and by now have lost most of their leaves.

The Poplars are among the last to turn yellow too, but lots of their leaves are already down.

A few of the smaller Sugar Maple saplings keep their yellow leaves until the last minute.

Only the Red Oaks across the street provide a bit of brownish red.

But it's really the Tamarack that mark the end of fall for me.  They've turned yellow, here on a dull gray day, and will soon lose their needles.  I planted this group deliberately near the back corner of our meadow, just to enjoy this sight every November.

  1. The tamaracks are a particular delight. I was still taking photos of fall colours yesterday, mostly bright yellows.

  3. Love the Tamarack (we call them Larches here on the west coast). Yeah, our fall colors are in their "last gasp" phase.

  4. Aldo Leopold's essay "Smoky Gold" is quite a tribute to the beauty of tamarack (or larch for those who prefer) and of grouse hunting (even though I haven't hunted in 45 years).

  5. November is about gold and burgundy. (tamarack and oak). Once they tamarack drops it's needles, that's when we figure the snow will start to come in ernest.
