A Camel in Grey County!?

Coming back from further south a month ago, Mrs. F.G. suggested we drive over the road east of Arthur; she had seen a camel there on her way home earlier in the summer!  I didn't quite believe her.

But we drove down that busy road, and there it was!  Mrs. F.G. was vindicated.  I squeezed the car off the road in the midst of traffic and crossed the road to get a picture.  But wait! .... there are some extra legs behind that camel.

Yes, the mother camel had a calf.  I've never seen a camel before outside a zoo, let alone a camel calf.

We watched for a few moments and the calf stuck very close to mama.

This is for all you ladies who also love puppies and kittens.  Or maybe you don't have the same reaction to a baby camel's face?

When finally there was a break in traffic, we started to pull away, noticing another camel in a pasture with some horses.  Dad perhaps?

  3. Camels? Now that is really interesting! I think all babies are cute, except maybe maggots. :-)

  4. Interesting to see you have them too. Down here in northcentral Pennsylvania there's at least one Amish farmer who's milking camels, apparently the milk brings a really high price in some urban areas.

  5. What a find, and to have the baby there as well, Mrs F.G. full marks for your eyes being so observant.

  6. Oh, I love the baby! Did you know that the U.S. Army experimented with keeping camels in the western states? That was 160 years ago, though.

  7. I'm not sure if she is still there, but out on San Juan Island in Washington State there was a camel named Mona. You could see here along the road in the pasture. It was quite an unusual sight. - Margy

  10. Do the owners make camel's milk cheese or something? Maybe they are just camel fans.
Want to see seriously cute baby animals? Try a baby rhino. They are utterly charming.
