Chestnuts Blooming

It's been a busy day here, starting with the repairman who came not long after 8 to check out our dishwasher (very good service, I only called yesterday, but it's going to cost $300.00++ to get fixed - oh how I enjoy this planned obsolescence!.  It went from that to physio in Owen Sound, which they tell me is going really well, though I still feel like a bobblehead (that's what you get with no trunk or abdominal muscles working).  Then it was a decadent but convenient lunch of hamburg, fries, onion rings and pop which has become our favourite when we're in Owen Sound.  Following that we stopped at the Town and Country Garden Nursery south of town.  Oops, I forgot the Ice Cream Place where I got a delicious Black Cherry cone.  After we finally got home we stopped at the Meaford Farmer's Market, down by the harbour.  Once home I did my laps up and down the street for my daily dose of fresh air, and now it's time for a bite to eat - finally!

And here are the Chestnut Trees in bloom.

Some photo credits go to Mrs. F.G.

  1. Oh, beautiful blossoms, which will turn to chestnuts, right? I didn't realize you didn't have the use of those muscles. :-(

  4. In my early childhood we had a big chestnut tree right outside the house and chestnut trees have remained close to my heart ever since. I still remember the smell of chestnuts and collecting them to put in a box and look at. Some we made little pipes out of and I used to like shaking the cardboard box I would put them in just to listen to them rumbling around in the box. The biggest chestnut tree I've seen is right here in the town of Bayfield. It's on the east side of highway 21 at Bayfield's southern end. It's in full bloom right now and it's gotta be over 60 feet tall. Just saw it this morning again.

Err, hadn't you already said "a decadent but convenient lunch of hamburg, fries, onion rings and pop" Sounds like you already ate -- or is once not enough?

Those are horse-chestnuts, not the European or American chestnuts that are edible. Horse-chestnuts have palmately compound leaves and pretty flowers like the ones in your photos, the flowers of edible chestnut aren't as showy and do not smell good.

    1. No I hadn't had enough to eat! That was lunch, I still need supper! I ran out of time to explain the difference between the chestnuts, and perhaps that's my limited southern Ontario perspective. I have been shown an American chestnut, just north of Lake Erie, but here they just pick up the blight and die, getting replaced with a bunch of sprouts. Can you really still get edible chestnuts? The edible ones my wife buys rarely are Italian chestnuts.

    2. Once upon a time (before the blight's arrival, about 1920) American chestnut apparently made up about 1/3 of the total number of trees in the oak-hickory forests of Pennsylvania. Virtually all of them were killed by the fungus but the root systems survived and many still produce sprouts. Some of those sprouts live long enough to produce seed before they too succumb. I've gathered nuts from some of those trees; people who like chestnuts say they're delicious but they're not to my taste.

  9. Sorry about the dishwasher, they are handy to have but like anything else - a pain when they aren't working! Love the chestnut blossoms!

  10. My husband left me last year after 25 years of marriage (he turned 50). It has been the most difficult year of my life, but full of lessons about myself and what life and marriage are all about. I am passionate about marriage and i didn't give up on my husband. resides in USA, I entered online in search of advice on how i can amend my marriage while i was at work. I saw so many positive reviews and nice feed back about how a Doctor called Robinson.buckler@yahoo.com has been wonderful with his work. I gave a shot to make contact with him via his Email and he assured me that my marriage will be peaceful and i believed in his words. 16 hours after he finished work, my husband came back home pleading and now, we are living peacefully again. Get in contact with him if you need any help.
