Chickadees and Goldfinch

Our bird feeding efforts in the winter are pretty limited.  We rarely see anything other than Chickadees and Goldfinch.  I think it's because we don't have a lot of trees or shrubs nearby for them to seek shelter in, or use as a sheltered stopping point on the way to the feeder.  But we have had at least a few of these visit the feeders.

However, getting good pictures of them is another story!  Even with my telephoto, these pictures pale in comparison to the bird pictures I see on many other blogs.  I am increasingly impressed whenever I do see great close pictures of birds, 'cause I know what a challenge that is!

  1. I'd be thrilled to look out and see these little guys. We get mostly House Sparrows with a couple of Chickadees, some Cardinals, and a pair of Downey Woodpeckers who come for the suet.

  3. They're pretty birds. My parents got a lot of them when they were living in cottage country, including blue and gray jays.

  7. They may only be chickadees and goldfinch but they need feeding too. And of course if either turned up across this side of the water there would be great excitement.

  11. I fed the birds awhile back, but I was overtaken with house sparrows, who would leave nothing for the little chickadees and goldfinch. I tried to keep up but finally gave it all up. I waited until midsummer when they had plenty of other food. I miss the little ones but not the house sparrows! :-)

  12. Your photos are good indeed! You catch the first bird in a funny position, and maybe the tail could be exchanged for a sharp beak :)

  16. It's so fun to watch the birds at the feeders and see who is visiting. We don't have anything exciting like a cardinal and I haven't even seen a nuthatch yet. I find it difficult to photograph them as they are so fast and I don't have a telephoto lens. I follow Birding NB on FB and there are some really spectacular photos there. But I keep trying and enjoy it. I hope you are getting stronger each day. Take care.

  17. With your interesting garden plants I find it difficult to believe those are all the birds you get. Odd. Hey, we got the warm wind and goodbye snow too!

  18. I'm happy to see your bird feeder shots. I think you are right about the lack of variety. Cover is really important. There have been studies done about the minimum distance a chickadee needs to get to cover before it will patronize a feeder. I forget the exact distance but I could check. No doubt other species have different requirements.
