Gathering of Geese

Yesterday we were in Owen Sound for physio, and with the weather feeling like a nice day in September we took our burgers down to the shore to enjoy lunch beside the water.  There's a nice paved trail there that we could get out on.  And there were lots of Canada Geese!

You could see the water through the trees, looking bright blue.  And resting on the grass, along with others in the water, were at least 100 Canada Geese.

There are lots of willows along the shoreline, and an innocent band of bright green vegetation.  That's actually a nasty invasive species, Wild Chervil.  It's a biennial so at this tine of year you just see the bright green leaves of next year's plants.  On the other hand if this provides a band of higher vegetation along the water, the geese won't get out to wander on the grass.  Geese want to be able to see all around, especially during that 6 week flightless molting period when they're raising their goslings.

Then we came to the Garden-on-the-Bay, a millennial project that provides a nice place to stop and take photos.  It's a popular place for wedding pictures.  But of course it's more interesting in the summer than in November!

At this time of year the different coloured shrubs are the most obvious.  Parts of the garden were being reconstructed too.

The most interesting of the shrubs was this Purple Beautybush with it's many tiny bright purple berries.  I don't think we've ever seen it before, at least not in Ontario.  But you can bet Mrs. F.G. will be seeing if she can find one to plant next year!

This is one of the more unusual Milkweeds, Butterfly Weed, with it's narrow upright seed pods.

Just a little further down the goose-poop-strewn path is this fancy big gazebo, another project of the Scenic City Order of Good Cheer.  I fear it's usually too windy out on this little point for this to get much use though - at least it's been windy anytime we've been here.

And from here you got a great view out over the sound into Georgian Bay, one of the best November days I can remember.

  1. We were watching the geese this morning near the shoreline in the harbour at Summerside. I know they are messy but I love those birds. The area you visited is beautiful, FG.

  3. I hope your physio wasn’t too uncomfortable. I had a heart operation on Wednesday! Through my groin. Oh dear that’s very painful! My heart doesn’t seem to have noticed at all.
Does anyone go out and weed those invasive plants?

  4. Great pictures! I can't see a shot of Canada geese without thinking about how much poop they generate! :-)

  7. Canada geese are grazers, so they need a lot of the low energy/nutrient grasses and forbs on which they feed, and thus they generate a lot of waste -- watch your step(and tires}.

  9. Our geese are slowly moving in. I like them and they do not land on my yard, so no mess!

I'd never heard of the Purple Beautybush but it sure is lovely! Also a different milkweed than I've ever seen. :)
