Two plants in our garden got here by hitch-hiking, some white Columbine and some tiny Herb-Robert.  They both travelled as seeds, buried in the soil we dug up with our Hostas when we moved.  We transplanted a LOT of Hostas, though still a tiny fraction of what we had.

Now we have 5 or 6 patches of Columbine growing right up through the Hostas, adding some nice blooms where our garden is mostly green.

The Columbine bloom is very pretty, and this picture shows both the front and back of the flower, including those 'tails' on the back.  You can also glimpse a bit of a pink Herb-Robert petal.

A bigger view of the garden where the first Columbines came up.

Herb-Robert is a tiny little native wildflower, a member of the Geranium family.  It's a rather scraggly plant, and some even consider it a weed or an invasive species.  It grows in shade on the limestone rocks, and I always think it provides a pretty splash of colour.

  1. So lovely! I think the columbines are brilliant little hitch-hikers, but the Herb-Robert not so much. Around here we call it "Stinky Robert" and it's pulled out of the woods whenever it's discovered. But I didn't realize it is so pretty! :-)

  2. All the flowers and plants in your garden are so pretty.

  3. Hosta leaves with NOT a single slug hole to be seen , how do you manage that? Mine transplanted OK, but should be a lot better next year. They look wonderful with the Columbines a little taller to show off their blooms.

  4. I made the mistake once of leaving some Herb Robert to provide a splash of colour and it ended up all over the place. Your Hostas are looking wonderful.

  5. All life is precious.

(except roaches...those jerks could disappear and I wouldn't mind...

  6. Now those are for sure sweet hitchhikers! I would be happy to have them hitchhike their way to my yard.

  7. Our columbines seed prolifically and we have columbines everywhere even though we only planted them in a front flowerbed. The hostas look really nice and should only improve with time.

  8. I at first thought the columbine flowers were the blooms of the hosta. All of your flowers look great. I like you garden area that you have created.
