March

March is the in between month here, still largely winter, but rapidly changing to spring.  Officially spring arrives on the 21st, but winter is largely gone by then.  And then we have another snowfall!  The main signs of spring outside our window are the expanding patches of grass and those beautiful warmer blue sky days that simply suck the snow off the landscape.

No leaves in March of course, so it's the bare tree trunks that strike me at this time of year.  With sunshine on the white snow it makes an interesting pattern that most of us probably ignore.

The branches in the canopy provide clear patterns on the snow, but because they're at eye level, they're really noticeable.

The snow disappears first around the base of trees, under evergreens and reflected from the walls of small buildings like our shed.  March brings these wonderful sunny days that are the real promise of spring.

  1. The same pattern takes place here, though at present we're having a heavy snowfall outside.

  2. The snow with shadows is so pretty. and your shed, lovely roof, side walls and a tiny window. This would be a welcome shelter if caught in the storm outside.

  5. That green grass around your shed looks very encouraging. I think it's the long slog of Winter that makes Spring so enjoyable for so many. Spring it seems is a time for renewing oneself whereupon Autumn is a time for reflection. Keep those blue skies coming:))

  6. Our last piles of snow are turning into run-offs. Crocus lived through the many snow days and are yellow and purple and cheery and the snowdrops which were blooming before all the snow survived and are now snow free and still blooming. Love your photos.

  8. our season now is pollen season...and my head is throbbing. Walking outside, the air is as thick as forest fire smoke. I love our trees, but the pollen is hard to live with.

  9. Always a welcome site to see the grass start to show. We cross back into Ontario, 3 weeks this Saturday, with our arrival at "The Ridge " somewhere between the 14th and 20th of April. Hope the snow is all gone so we can make it up the lane. Looking forward to seeing you this summer, take care.

  11. Thank you for showing us the hope of Spring at the Ridge! :) The grass should be nice and green with all of the precipitation you've had over the winter.
Ditto to Bill's comment above about seeing you two this summer.

  12. I always find pictures with shadows or reflections particularly appealing; it's a mystery how our brain seems to filter them out so that we're barely aware of their beauty as we go about our daily lives. March here is known for its winds and it's certainly living up to its reputation this week.
