Valley Drive
We haven't been getting out much, but we did get in a drive down the valley a couple of weeks ago. The highlight of such a drive is a stop at the Blackbird Pie Company in Heathcote. Today it was a half dozen Butter tarts that found its way back to the car.
The perfect nourishment for an afternoon drive!
We started by dropping down into the harbour in Thornbury, looking out over the bay. There hasn't been much blue in the water for some time now.
Looking east toward Blue Mountain you could see large ridges of ice build-up several feet high along the shore.
And there we spotted two children playing on the ice hummocks .... not very safe in my mind.
Driving south out of town through Clarksburg we were surprised to find one of the older orchards had been cut down. It's a bit of a shock when you see it like this.
But back behind the cut trees you can see new trees have already been planted in the new high density style of orchard. I expect the frnt field will be planted this way too.

It's about time.
It does look cold and snowy there. I do hope that orchard will be replanted in the manner you describe. :-

ReplyDeleteThere is nothing like a good butter tart! My grandmother made the best ones but her recipe was all by how it looked and felt so no one could figure out how to replicate them.
ReplyDeleteAlways good to have a snack, you wouldn't want your blood sugar to drop too low. It probably wasn't safe for the kids to be on the ice, but a life without some risk and adventure is a life not worth living. Kids need to have some risk and adventure to learn how to make decisions and become independent.
ReplyDeleteWe noticed a lot of orchards being revitalized when we were down that way late last summer. I never really thought of that area being apple country before. I'm thinking we need to do our holidays in Simcoe Co. again this year.

I haven't had butter tarts, really good butter tarts for ages! Hmm, might have to make some when we stop for 2 weeks. ;) I usually add dates and nuts and coconut like one of my elderly neighbours used to do. I was a teen and got her mail for her.......she paid me but the best payment was her butter tarts!
