Keady Market

Keady Market is a claustrophobic chaotic zoo.  There must be 100 miscellaneous flea market booths, selling everything from sunglasses to linens - not just 1 or 2 booths, but 7 or 8 each selling sunglasses and linens, as hundreds of other things you don't need!  By 10 a.m. there must be 1000 people and 500 cars.  We walked around it once and that was enough for me!

But there's one aisle that features real farmers and the kinds of fresh produce and farm goods that you go to a market for.  And at the end of this aisle is the livestock auction, which is the origin of it all (which is why the market is on a Tuesday).

At this time of year there is a very good reason for going, braving the bumper car games in the fields used as parking lots, and braving the crowds, besides the people watching.

We try our best to avoid the crowds, getting there early, and sticking to what we're there for - fresh strawberries and black currants from particular vendors.

Thus there have been two successful expeditions to Keady Market this summer, with a big batch of strawberry jam and a second batch of black currant jam the result.  Worth all the trouble I'd say.

  6. The food looks delicious - the rest is not for me either. This year I've frozen my berries for making jam later in the years. I've never had black currants - sounds great.

  7. As my granny once said of our local supermarket - "I'm sure more people would go if it wasn't so crowded".
