Dinosaurs in Owen Sound!

With our grandson and his family visiting for the holidy, we headed out to Owen Sound to see the dinosaur exhibit at Grey Roots Museum.  They were enough to scare any self-respecting grandparent, let alone a five=year-old!

These were animatronic models, and when this guy waved his head up and down, opened its enormous jaws, and roared, 2 feet in front of you, it sure made you stop and step back a pace.

This was the whole model - parts of the entire model moved realistically while the monster roared effectively.  Photos were a challenge because of the dark room, with spotlight lighting, though it was very effective as a display.

This one greeted us as we first stepped into the darkened exhibit.  All life-size and quite a contrast with exhibits that feature mounted skeletons, though there were some of those too.

A juvenile T-Rex.  Besides the working models, this exhibit featured the most recent discoveries in archeology, which have indeed been revolutionary.

One of those revolutionary findings is that some dinosaurs may have been covered in an early version of feathers, or 'proto-feathers', primarily as a temperature regulation mechanism.  Here's an example on one of the models.  And this could make birds the descendents of dinosaurs!

A very well done display, and the whole thing was kept simple enough for young children.  We'd highly recommend it.  The exhibit is here until early September and the museum has a special rate just now whereby Grey County residents bringing out-of-county guests get in half-price (on an already very moderate admission).  A neat reflection of this model and the museum symbol sticking up behind it as we left the museum (which I didn't even notice at the time)!

  4. That's the sort of thing I'd enjoy. The Museum of Nature here was very busy on Canada Day, particularly among the fossils.

  14. It looks like a wonderful exhibit. I can see some of that being scary with the sounds coming out of them and they turn to look at you. All ages, who like dinos, should really have a great time when seeing it.
