A Rainy Day Drive

I drove from home west to Walkerton last week, to meet my sister and have lunch.  It was a gray, rainy day, and not very good for photos, but I tried to capture a few barn shots anyway.

I liked this simple moderate sized barn, an older barn with a new addition.  Looks like a small dairy farm, and the barn is well cared for.

These buildings looked well cared for too, viewed across a field of corn.  I was surprised how few large open fields there were in my hour-long drive.  A lot of this landscape is wooded and hilly, with farms just openings where the land is a little better.

This barn certainly is not being used for farming anymore, but it is being cared for.  The solar panels on the roof look pretty ambitious!

This barn on the other hand was just looking sad.  I doubt it will last long now.

I passed a small farm implement dealer, with some pretty big and expensive new machines!  At least they make them in bright colours!  I do have my doubts about some of the new farm technology, especially herbicides, but I focus my attitude on the farmers themselves, who I have a great deal of respect for.  So I'm of two minds, but come down on the side of the farmers, whatever type of farm operation they choose to have.

I was intrigued with this barn.  I've noticed that larger barns with an overhang like this are few and far between, and this had it on two sides, the only one I've seen like this.

I've driven by this farm many times, and never really stopped to notice the barns.  The front one here has an unusual roof line, and intriguingly the roof line of the further one is slightly different.  I drove two hours, by different routes, and got about 10 barn pictures - a far cry from Al of the Bayfield Bunch who goes driving in Huron County and gets 50-60 barn pictures!

  1. What an array of barns this week. The Cockshutt tractor in the third photo sure stands out. It looks like a great rainy day to me! Thanks for linking up this week and I hope that you will find more neat barns in the valley. Tom The Backroads Traveller

  2. Nice collection of barns! Of course, I'm a traditionalist, and like the red ones best. :)

  3. Actually, the overcast skies made for a very nice looking bunch of pictures. I like the patterns in the cuttings in the first one, too.

  5. Quite a collection! My grandfather had a farm up in the Hanover-Neustadt area north of there, near one of the branches of the Saugeen. I wonder if its barn is still in use or was replaced.
