The White Garden

For a brief few days, our garden looks like a white garden, with the enormous white Peony blossoms, and then the slender White Iris.  Little else is in bloom, but the colours are soon to change!

We have several of these beautiful plants that usher in the blooming season in the garden.  They're not named varieties, but stock from a breeder who was trying different plants.

They form large healthy clumps of flowers that dominate the garden in early June.

Until the heavy rains come that is, and then some of the stems collapse, the petals get dropped, and they remain green the rest of the summer.

But while they're in bloom the bees love them (unlike those showy 'double' Peony blossoms which don't actually have pistels and stamens, and don't provide any nourishment for bees at all!  Here, it's sometimes difficult to find a flower without bees visiting it.

And the patterns of pistils and stamens are pretty amazing too!

This one has a slight pink tone to the white flowers.

Along with them soon come the White Iris.  We have three clumps of these and they are truly beautiful.

But now the slender Blue Iris are starting to bloom, and the colours in the garden will change fast.

Likewise the pink Peonies - the season of colour in the garden is about to arrive!

  9. Beautiful, beautiful blossoms. I think our peonies will loose there petals to heavy rain today. But they were glorious for a full week and a half, so I cannot complain.
