Fences-with-the-posts-all-close-together

I'm still intrigued with the fences I see when I'm driving around the valley where the posts are so close together.  Farmers have added extra posts at very short spacing, to prevent the fences collapsing under the winter snow load when the ten foot snowbanks melt, turn half into ice, and collapse in the spring.  I posted a few in the winter here, in contrast to these peaceful summer views.

One of my favourite rural views, with the Bruce Trail stile in the foreground.  That isolated old small barn looks great in the winter snows.

You can clearly see the regular larger fenceposts, with smaller ones added at very narrow intervals in between.

One of several farms around here where the barn is still in use, but no house remains.  I talked to a farmer nearby today who farms 2500 acres, most of which is rented - a long way from the typical 100 acres farms that each old barn represents!

  3. Your area is beautiful in all seasons. As for the extra posts they are everywhere in Central Texas with no snow in the foreseeable eons! Your photo yesterday looking across the field and toward the hills was outstanding!

  4. At a grass strip airport in Oregon, there is a style for people on foot to get in and out of the runway. Deer are a very bad thing to be on a runway when you are landing or taking off. - Margy

  5. Totally unrelated to this blog post, but have you read John Riley's book "The Once and Future Great Lakes Country?" If not it's a must read for someone like you.

  6. I didn't know that about fences and why extra posts are added. The information makes the pictures more interesting. :-)

  7. Beautiful rural scenery behind those fences. I like the stile over the fence in the first photo. One doesn't see them often.

  9. Very unusual to see them so close together and still have the fence wire between them. Somebody spent a lot of extra time and effort.
