Found - A Hand Cycle!

When I was in the hospital, after I'd woken from my near coma and been moved out of ICU to a recovery floor, I had access to a hand cycle to build my strength back.  We've been looking for something similar for months - the one the hospital had cost $1000.00+.  It was just a coincidence but on a drive to Owen Sound Mrs. F.G. stopped in at the MED-E-OX store to see if they had blue pads (they've been back-ordered for months).  And lo and behold she found a simple cheap hand cycle!

It's actually a hand/foot cycle, but obviously my feet aren't going to use it.  We have it set up on the dining room table, on a rubber mat so it won't slide around, and I've tried it out 3 times.  It's wonderful!  This gives me an upper body workout that is better than anything else I've experienced in the past three years, and I expect to use it often.  We've pretty well given up on keeping the house clear of my stuff!

Meanwhile we're in a run of cloudy grey days that will probably last well into February.  The sun never quite breaks through, so as winter unfolds and spring gets closer (in about 10 weeks), the return of the sun will be deeply appreciated!

The snow is on-again, off-again as it partly melts and then gets covered again, but we have had no deep snowfall yet.  However, our terrified provincial Premier, Doug Ford, has re-imposed a lockdown.  Students are back to online learning and at least one of my PSWs will probably be off work supervising her three children, much to her dismay.  Ford has also closed restaurants which eliminates our coffee group for now, something that I'll really miss, while the cafe has to survive on take-out orders.

I'm pretty well out of ideas for blog posts, so I thought I'd take you off to Iceland in a few upcoming posts.  We were there a few years back, and I've never put together anything with those photos.  Hope you enjoy it, while it takes my mind off winter here!

  3. Congratulations on your belated Christmas present -- enjoy the cycling. Sown here most schools are open while COVID rages. I heard someone say that closing schools penalizes children to protect the damn-fool adults who chose not to get vaccinated -- interesting point even if only partially correct.

  4. I would like to go to Iceland some day, so look forward to that. I think it is wonderful that you realize keeping up your exercise routine, no matter how limited, is essential to your physical and mental health.

  5. I bought one of those pedalers just like that for my Dad when he was at home before moving into the Sunnybrook Vet Centre. He used it all the time for legs and arms. I got it from agecomfort.com which is in Concord ON. They have a great catalogue of things and I think they still have free shipping over $50. They may have some other things that you could use.
The lockdown is a real trial for us so we can only hope that it works and we can get out & about again.

  7. I am so glad you found the exercise device. Your winter is looking like ours but we are now severely cold. Our snow is not going to melt at four below F.

  9. Finding a bargain these days is a huge bonus. Snow on the roads, schools closed, and what about the Australian open and Novak's drama? Seems even the #1 cannot be exempt from the Australian Border rules.Still a heat wave down south, today a little cooler and a pleasant 15C by my laptop. The heron gets his nose closer to the snow as it creeps higher!!

  12. Well, now I know what a hand cycle is. With yesterday's snow still going on this morning I think winter is here to stay. Probably the same thing happening up your way. Checking the 14 day forecast I see no hint of a January thaw. Keep on cycling.

  14. Well spotted and a good pickup by Mrs FG.

You made me check the forecast in some despair. I do see some hope for sun in the long range forecast, but not as much as I would like.
