Swans on Lake Eugenia

 Jusrt over a week ago I shared a five-year-old post of the Tundra Swans on Lake Eugenia.  Yesterday was a glorious warm sunny day (today is even warmer) so we figured we'd go for a drive and check them out ourselves.  We've seen several posts showing them on the lake.

We were pleased to see that the swans were still there, at least a few of them, but the lake had been drained to its low spring level to make room for water storage in case of any spring floods.  After the torrential rains and flooding of Apr. 1, 2016, they're being extra careful.

The little island was high and dry and the nearby ice had all gone out.  As a result the swans were all a long distance away.

These were about the best shots I got.  Plenty of Canada Geese too, but very few distant ducks.

Most of the Canada Geese we're seeing now have paired up and are beginning to think about nesting.

    Our local Canada Geese are getting very territorial and irritable. Small skirmishes keep breaking out.

    The swans here, not Tundra as far as I know, have also been keeping their distance -- from me, anyway.

    Always nice to not only see the Tundra Swans each Spring but to hear there distinctive calls as they wing their way overhead.

    They must be expecting lots of rain. Great to see the swans - not a species that ever graces our shores, though we have Whooper and Bewick's Swans visiting us every winter.

    The arrival of the Tundra Swans, spring and fall, is one of the highlights on my nature calendar. I haven't missed it for nigh on fifty years and I hope the trend continues!

    Waterfowl seem scarce this spring, they've either already gone north or are still to the south -- probably the former. Maybe they've skipped over you as well.

    so fun to see them come back, and especially nest!! i saw one mute swan a few days ago...at my favorite lake!!

    Swans are such beautiful birds! I don't think we see them here or at least I've not seen them.

    I like your last years shot. We get the trumpeter swans that fly through here.
