We're starting into a run of days that promise some sunshine, and then more days that promise temperatures well above freezing. Today is brilliantly sunny, though still cold, but next Tuesday and Wednesday the forecast says 10°C! I can hardly wait!
I've taken some 'before' pictures so I can share them with you after our first few days of spring melt. And I've been watching two Red Squirrels chase each other around the trees this morning, madly spiralling their way around the tree trunks. I thought it was a chipmunk that lived under the neighbour's shed, but I watched it disappear there today and it's a Red Squirrel. So we have two of these bossy little creatures, living opposite sides of the yard, who obviously don't like the other trespassing on their territory. I do find it amusing the way they spiral around the tree trunks, almost touching, as they touch each other, going so fast I can hardly follow them.
They are so agile, and those bushy tails, I can only guess at your delight to reach that magic 10C, double figures herald in a spring return.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see any red squirrels here. I don't know if up here they're hibernating, or if they keep well out of sight. I only see them from spring through fall.
ReplyDeleteThey are doing their mating dance! I see lots of them playing tag through the trees in our back yard.
ReplyDeleteI rarely see them down here but it is always a treat when I do! Let's all hope for that melt next week!
ReplyDeleteI have noticed recently that the squirrels are often upside down on the branches of the Sugar Maple in the backyard, and they appear to be licking the bark, and in some cases have chewed a couple of patches bare. I am assuming that sweet sap is flowing and they are lapping it up.
ReplyDeleteThe sunlight is wonderful to see. We are getting closer to spring.
ReplyDeleteWe have the same weather, a day or so later.
ReplyDeleteSunshine makes all the difference when it is cold out. We have red squirrels but they are very small and you can almost mistake them for chipmunks.
ReplyDeleteYes, those little Red Squirrels are certainly bossy alright. We have several of them here as well and they are almost impossible to keep out of the bird feeders. The even chase the bigger Black Squirrels around. I've heard they are even known to chase cars out of town.
ReplyDeleteSoon you (me too) will be able to bask in the sunshine like a turtle on a log. Red squirrels often gnaw through the bark on sugar maple trees to drink the sweet sap -- maybe that's what yours was doing.
ReplyDeleteYou still have more snow than we do! We are melting too!
ReplyDeletesee...you are special also, just like i said you were!! so pretty, our squirrels are alway up to something too!!!
ReplyDeleteIsn't the sun wonderful! Your pretty chairs actually have feet!! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to the 10C as well!! Yay!
Our birds are singing and house huning even though the temps are barely above freezing. Our weather is like a seesaw here.
ReplyDeleteCute little guy...even if they are pests at times. Hooray, spring seems to be well on its way.
ReplyDeleteTake care, stay well.
I think they are mating when they scurry around the trees like that. We have lots of black and grey squirrels but not red ones. Love your beautiful blue skies.
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to watch squirrels, we have quite a few grey squirrels that like to visit :)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
