Thursday we finally got to the pain clinic in Orangeville, a 2 hour drive with stops for coffee and gas. At least that's better than a 4 hour drive to London! I have no idea why there isn't one up here in Collingwood or Owen Sound. And it boggles my mind to realize that none of the 59 or so medical professionals we've talked to over 2+ years was aware of this opportunity for patients suffering long term pain.
We found the doctor very helpful. He described the options and which ones would probably work well for me. We came away with a complex cream made of 5 different pain-killing ingredients, in proportions to suit me. It's too early to know how well this will work, but even if it doesn't I'm now confident we're doing our best to treat this pain, so I'm pleased.
The first part of the drive home was like a tour of dilapidated barns - very sad! I've always thought the stretch of highway from Orangeville to Shelburne was pretty sad, but it seems to have gone downhill further. This reflects changing land use in the area, as urban pressure pushes up land prices.
I can't pretend there are no new barns though. I've actually see several small barns in this style, a drive shed on one side and a barn with a small hayloft on the other - always painted red.
And this one goes along with these buildings, a large low modern hog barn. I have the impression that the only groups investing in new farm buildings like these today are Mennonites.
North of Shelburne we passed through the huge Shelburne Wind Farm, all the windmills twirling and looking bright white in the sun.
It's sad to see those barns slowly falling down.

ReplyDeleteIntractable pain can be a really depressing issue to deal with, here's hoping you get some relief. Those falling-down barns look like many down here, except for Amish and Mennonites the days of mixed agriculture farms are finished -- at least for the foreseeable future. A large power company wants to build a 1,000 acre solar farm near here on land that had been farms.

ReplyDeleteWe love the turbines, there is just something about them (maybe because we have them up at the Ridge), their magnitude and noises are like company. :)

I was referred to the pain clinic almost a year ago. There is no appointment in sight yet.

ReplyDeletei am so excited for you and also anxious to see how you make out. i have nerve pain in my face and mouth (i guess), and nothing seems to really help. i have been using magic mouthwash, it helps a little!! nice images...of all the barns!!

ReplyDeleteLike other commenters I too hope this cream helps you. And it sounds like you may have tapped into a good Doctor. It's always sad to see so many grand old barns in such disrepair and neglect. Every time I see a barn that is being refurbished it always makes me want to go the farm house door and say 'Thankyou' for giving that old barn a new life.
