Travelling Vicariously Through Blogs

I've always enjoyed blog posts that tell the story of a big trip.  Before this all happened my wife and I had big plans for further travels in the next decade.  Now that's not going to happen, but I fully expect to find bloggers writing about their travels so I can follow along.

In the immediate future, Al and Kelly of Travel with the Bayfield Bunch, are leaving for the maritimes in the next few days.  I expect to really enjoy their trip, as will many others among their faithful followers.  Another style of blog is Travels with Gord and Cathie, written by Gord, a good friend of mine.  His blog is in the form of a trip journal, something they have always kept over years of travel.  He only established his blog recently, but he has uploaded the stories of 11 different trips dating back to 2007.

There are numerous other blogs that emphasize travel, a number by full-time RVers.  Let me just cite three examples.

The first blog, Island Girl Walkabout, by Hector, Brenda and Angel, is now retired.  But you can still read it, and find the story of their several month long trip to Alaska in 2015.  It's illustrated with spectacular photography; Hector now has a professional photography website, H.M.Lopez Photography.  And there are lots of stories of their trips around the southwest where they now live.

Another example is The Chouters, who went on a similar trip to Alaska in 2016.  Their stories made great reading.  Finally there's Take to the Highway, by Suzanne.  Suzanne travelled through all four of the Canadian Atlantic provinces in 2017, and provides some great stories of the out-of-the-way places she visited, especially lighthouses.  Her photography is spectacular.

I'm sure there are many others I could cite, but these ones stick with me.  Do you have any favourite travel stories from the blogs you read?

  1. One that I do follow is an American couple who spend a substantial amount of time in their RV, now retired. They've been in the Great Smoky area during the summer.

  2. I don't follow any blogs that focus exclusively on trips, but I have enjoyed Musings at travelerswife.blogspot.com (they live in Hawaii but travel a lot). :-)

  3. I read such a variety of blogs, and see the world through other eyes and words . Our short trips have been on day tramps, or family visits. And now we will have a short trip to find our new home. Did you see the " SOLD " sign I posted? So we are in that state of upheaval, packing, sorting and disposing!!! You will know all about these, and I am so thankful you moved and were settled in before the surgery.

  7. Some travel blogs are well written with good or great photos, others go from a complete breakfast menu to chasing after a fly in the car to what time the writer went to sleep -- as with novels in the bookstore there are the good, the bad and the ugly. Enjoy your vicarious trips and, hopefully, you'll be able to take some of your own as things settle down.

  8. We have been full time RVers for ten years with trips to the southwest every winter and one to Inuvik in June of 2009. I really enjoy following along with many others, sometimes getting ideas for where to go and where to park. I've read your blog off the Bayfield's site for some time. Enjoy your vicarious travel!

  9. There are a few bloggers who really make their trip come to life with anecdotes and excellent photography. You may wish to look into travel for those with wheel chairs, because there are still some trips with less challenge. Is it not nice we can travel vicariously, though?

  10. I don't like travel, for many reasons, I enjoy our daycations, though. We've done a ton of day trips lately, just to get me out of the house. With a bit of research, you may be able to do the same thing, once you have established a baseline of activity. Good luck.

  11. Hello, sounds like you have some great travel blogs lined up. Hawaii and Alaska are two of my favorite places. I am envious of the full time RVers. There are so many places I would like to visit. Enjoy your day and weekend!

  12. Great idea to 'travel' with bloggers that go places we don't go.......yet. :)
We follow Marlene and Benno and although they are stationery during summer at Leamington, they traveled for 8 years exclusively on their sailboat, Diesel Duck. http://marleneandbenno.blogspot.com/ Interesting stories. They now have a travel trailer and hope to travel to the southwest on land this winter.

  13. I read the Bayfield blog, having been recently through that area. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Algonquin Park bloggers. I live right on the border of the park, but there is so very much of it we have no knowledge of.

  14. Oh Dear this memory of mine. You almost slipped through the cracks on me Stew. If I don't act on something the very second I think of it chances are it slips into history on me. I don't read as many blogs as I once did but I do have my favs with yours of course being one of them. I liked your blog from the first time I read it. Down to earth, no nonsense, no hot air, factual, educational, and honest. Your writing and photos hold my attention. Keep up the good work and thanks for the mention:))
