The Birds are (Mostly) Gone

The birds that migrate here quietly start disappearing in August.  All those bright colourful birds that make spring so interesting just quietly melt away.  How do I show you the birds that have disappeared for the season, when they're already gone!?  I guess I show you the few that are still here!

The only two noticeable birds that will migrate south soon that I am still seeing at this time of year are the Turkey Vultures and the Great Blue Heron.  This one rose off the roadkill before I got the car stopped, but landed in a nearby tree to pose for me today.

Only one of four was left on the road at this point, but a lot further away.

This is the pond where we sometimes see our local Great Blue Heron.

He was there the other day, and I happened to have my telephoto lens.  I think the auto-focus worked very well on this one.  There are a couple of other species still around; at least I think I'm hearing Flickers and Robins squeaking a little when I'm on my walks.  But other than that, it's the birds we'll see all winter - Blue Jays, Crows, Chickadees and a few others.  The summer birds season has almost ended.

  1. That turkey vulture isn't pretty, but he sure is exciting to see. The heron, on the other hand, is beautiful. :-)

  2. Here, the sparrows are thinking of their nests. and the heron, so elegant.

  3. I think Blue Herons look very elegant and are amazing to see in flight. I've never seen a turkey vulture before--quite gruesome looking. We had snow already, so winter is certainly approaching!

  4. Our Great Blue Heron has returned. Don't know where it goes in the summer, but it returns to us in the fall and winter. - Margy

  5. Vultures have full-time jobs working on the road clean-up crew! When your roads are covered with snow, they come south to help our local Vultures.
    Love the great Blue Heron!

  6. Most of our summer birds have left too, now looking forward to the arrival of our winter visitors who include many of my favourites. Neither of your two subjects are likely to turn up here at any time of year.

  7. Have not noticed many birds around either the than a few flocks heading south. The turkey vultures have lots of find on our roads.

  8. Hello, We saw lots of vultures around here in the fall, it is hunting season. They get the leftovers from the hunters. Love the heron shot, great capture. Happy Wednesday, enjoy your day!

  11. We see lots of those vultures too and blue jays and chicadees. They are usually moving too quickly for me to capture on film.

  12. Sad when the birds all leave. We still have quite a few, and they've rediscovered our backyard feeders.

  13. I haven't seen any herons here in two or three weeks, and I suspect the vultures tend to stick to the countryside.

  17. Those Vultures are not the most attractive birds. Though I do love seeing the Herons. They are one of my favorite birds.

  18. The turkey vultures are pretty ugly but when soaring up high are very graceful. Always a lot of them around here.

  19. Hmm, the ugly and the beautiful! But both play their roles in nature.

  21. Hello. The head and beak of the Turkey vulture is amazing.

  22. I love seeing the turkey vultures soaring overhead, so graceful. We had a flock of warblers flitting through our pine tree catching those annoying tiny black flies the other day. They were all wearing their winter coats, so I didn't have much luck in identifying them. Robins spent all last winter here, which was the first time I've seen them do that.

  23. Yes I also notice the slow disappearance of birds during the latter summer months. Forests become quiet in the Autumn and very few birds at the feeder.
