Flooded Fences

Driving around the past few days I've seen a lot of flooded fences (and roads, and bridges...).  Now we've had snow, and the ponds are frozen or at least frozen slush, and the landscape is white.  But four days ago it looked like this.

Today it's been snowing on and off all day here, so it's definitely white out there, but we didn't get the 10-15 cm. in the forecast.  I think March tricked us this year by giving us some nice warm days too early, and getting our expectations up.

Because when I went back and checked my blog from past Aprils, this weather seems pretty typical; some years have even been worse.   In April 2011, I wrote about the crazy weather, from working in the garden to plunging temperatures and then snow.

In 2012 we got 20" of snow on April 24th!  And that was after the snowblower and snow tires had all been put away!

2013 apparently wasn't very snowy in April, but reading April's posts in 2014 sounds like this year!  The landscape was still white on Apr. 15th, and I wrote about waterfalls and flooded fences.  Actually had some better wet fence pictures that year I think.

Last year we had only a little snow in April, but it did snow on our Daffodils in mid-April.

The above picture would be all white today, but last Saturday the water was washing over this road I drove down.  I got out and checked to be sure there was no channel newly eroded across the road but hidden beneath the water, and then drove on.

But looking to the right, this was the flooded field, with the flooded driveway into the farm just showing on the left.  A lot of people will be glad when this snow vanishes and the water goes down.

I've been getting pretty slack in my walking, between deep cold, rain, and ice in March, being sick for two weeks after that, and just being lazy, I'm falling behind.  I did get out for two good 2 hour+ hikes last week before this snow returned, but then our poor dog Roxie blew out her knee racing too fast around a corner.  Suddenly I have no need to get up and go for a walk every morning as I usually do.  By today I was feeling downright twitchy, so I pushed myself and got out for a walk in the woods and another on the trail at the Ski Club, and I feel much better for it!  I'm gonna have to re-activate my willpower!

  2. That water looks quite deep, and probably cold....
April can be a fickle month, the promise of sunshine and flowers, yet snow clouds still gather above.
    Beautiful pictures, stirring.

  5. Isn't that the way it goes - you take off the snow tires, put away the snowblower - and wake up the next morning to more of the white stuff! :) Hope your neck of the woods dries out soon.

  10. I really like how I can go back for other springtimes to compare them on my blog posts. I also look at previous times I've gone on certain hikes to make sure I'm ready for the current one. That is a LOT of water, I must say. Glad to hear you're getting back on the walking routine. :-)

  12. with the conditions you described, it's best you stay put. even enjoying those "lazy" days at home, it may not be safe for those care free walks!!

your images are pretty but wow, that's a lot of water!!!!

  13. Please give your willpower a good kick in the butt and get out walking -- rain, snow, cold or clear blue sky -- do it!

  14. Yes, the weather has been strange. We got warm weather all through sugar season and now we are into April, we are getting the weather that we should have had during sugar season.

  15. That flooding reminds me of a portion of the property where I grew up- the north half of the land was lower than the south half, and in the spring there would always be pools of water that would take their time draining away into the earth.

Here yesterday we got snow, and a good amount of it into the night.

  16. Lots of the farms near Bellingham WA flood during rains and when snow melt floods the rivers. The visiting geese, ducks and swans appreciate it more than the land owners I'm sure. - Margy

  20. Oh my.. you know, I may take my snow covered lawn to all that flooding! I'm not sure - it's a tough one. I can remember back in 2007 when my daughter was born on April 11th, we were all in my backyard for her 1st birthday, in the blistering sun. She wore a sundress. I was melting in my tank and shorts. 9 years ago, that was April.

  21. Looks like if an animal waited long enough, it could just swim over the fence. Sure looks wet and cold.

  22. I noticed standing water in fields on our drive north today but nothing compared to what you are experiencing, that is quite a lot of water!
