The New Furry Gnome Garden Begins!

Our deck has been transformed by the addition of 4 large planter boxes, made at wheelchair height!  We're both looking forward to creating a raised garden of flowers, herbs and hopefully a few veggies.

This is our deck before the new planters arrived.

The first one gets put in place.

And here they are; there's a 4th out of sight to the left.

These planters were all made for us at a Mennonite nursery, the Maxwell Nursery, over the winter.  They were made to our specifications so I could access them in my wheelchair, all built of cedar and pine.  All but one are 8 feet long and about 16" deep and wide.  The fourth is shorter, allowing room on that side of the deck for my ramp.

And these are the raised beds at Parkwood Institute, the rehab hospital I spent two months in.  That's where we got the idea.  I'll be posting updates so you can see how these develop.  Today is a bright sunny day, if still cool, so Mrs. F.G. is out there working on them,  She's the horticulturalist in the family, so she's in charge.  I will just be documenting her work!

  1. Beautiful woodworking there, and these will be great, summer and winter, so easy to have some frost cloth over as the plants grow bigger and no need to get dirty feet or wheels. We have built, well, Hugh built them, vege beds that are sitting on the ground, but filled with potting mix and compost, just a good height to pick the strawberries, spinach, and more. Looks like your summer will be bright and productive.

  2. Good going. You are demonstrating that life isn't over until it's over. And now you can keep occupied making sure Mrs. F. G. does it right. :O) Happy gardening. George would of been proud of you.

  4. So you'll supervise while Mrs. FG does the work eh, no point in having them wheelchair height if you don't get your hands dirty -- you can be in charge of weed removal.

  6. These are wonderful! I am a little jealous at how much better they are than just digging in the ground. You are doing so well. How's the leg? :-)

  7. The planter boxes are looking like a piece of art, and will be lovely with flowers or whatever you choose. I hope you stay safe and well and your leg recovers well too.

  8. I like the way those planters are raised up so you can get a bit closer to them (though be careful not to drive into them and damage your legs even more). Looking forward to seeing the fruits (or flowers) of your labour.

  9. At your first paragraph I knew where the idea came from! I'm not surprised, we sat with you at those raised gardens at Parkwood and know how much you enjoyed them. My heart just swelled at the beautiful idea you took home with you. Can't wait to see what Mrs. F.G. creates in them!

  10. What an absolutely great idea you brought home from Parkwood with you. A great way for you to be involved in the gardening. Those boxes do look well constructed and coming from the Mennonite folks you know they are. A great way to keep enjoyably busy and increase your botanical knowledge via home tutoring:))
