Irish Music!

Although we enjoyed the old steam engine and the sawmill, the Irish music at Pratie Oaten was fabulous!  It was like being at a Celtic festival, but getting in free with our memberships.  Those memberships have paid for themselves about 4x over now, and there's still more to come.

So we headed for the schoolhouse where I was pleased to find another wheelchair ramp.  This building is not an original but a replica, built by volunteers.

Inside some really toe-tapping music was emanating from this group of 10 musicians in the band ScattertheCats.  A varied collection of instruments as well as musicians.

A close look shows you the variety of instruments.

Some of the musicians could switch instruments easily too.

It was fun to be in the old one-room schoolhouse, since my dad taught in a one-room school in the 1930s just about 3 miles away.  And the music was fabulous!

We headed on for the big barn where another group was playing.  Unfortunately we decided that this building wasn't safely accessible.

But there were more very realistically costumed historic village residents sleeping in the sun.

There used to be lots of old windmills like this scattered around Ontario's rural countryside.  You don't see many anymore.

  1. Those old school desks sure brought back memories for me. For a short time I attended a one room school house west of Dryden Ontario in the mid fifties. A little place called Oxdrift. That certainly is a nice looking schoolhouse.

  2. Irish music sets my toes to tapping. It's so nice to learn that more and more places are becoming accessible. And I too remember an old school desk similar to these. :-)

  3. Irish music is one of my favorites even though I'm of German heritage and like that musical tradition as well.

  5. You can't beat a bit of Irish music, though something of a novelty to see it in a classroom rather than a bar.

  6. Nothing like Irish tunes to get your head swaying and feet tapping! Love the one room school houses, I went to a couple, then two rooms for more years. :) Nice memories.

  9. My elementary school years were spent in a country school with three grades per room. It was a 6 room school. One was the dining room, one was the library and one was empty as the number of students dwindled. It closed within two or three years after I attended 7th grade there. It was the same school building my mother attended from 1925 through 1936. To go beyond the 10th grade a student had to move to town to finish through the 12th grade.

  10. The music must have been wonderful to hear. They looked like a devoted group. I like the sheep napping in the corner.
