Birds of the North Woods

The birds we saw around Sand Lake were typical of the north woods in September.  But my sister puts out a fair variety of food when they're there, so the birds are used to coming right to the front porch.  I sat there for some time trying to get pictures; at least some of them turned out ok!

 Blue Jay

Chickadee

White-breasted Nuthatch (on a distant pine)

Red-breasted Nuthatch

Downy Woodpecker

Red Squirrel - I love how his tail shows up in the sun!

  1. I just love your bird pictures, and that red squirrel is even a cutie! Nuthatches and their upside-down ways are a personal favorite. :-)

    1. The birds pictured in Stew's pictures do not migrate south; they spend the winter here with us.

  6. Great selection of some of our iconic species. The only thing I might suggest is that you accord the Chickadee is its full name, Black-capped Chickadee. Although it is the only chickadee found in our area there are several other species of chickadee.....Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Mountain Chickadee, Boreal Chickadee...etc.
