Cross-Country Skiing!!

Last Tuesday was 3 months since my heart surgery, and I was finally allowed to go cross-country skiing - so I was out the door with my skis!  In fact I skiid 3 times last week, in 3 different places.

It was simply great to get back on skiis, and head for the trails.  I'm sticking to the flatter trails to start with, and this is my favourite in the area, part of the Glenelg Nordic Ski Trails.

But on the first day I actually went to the closer Beaver Valley Nordic Trails, which are just around the corner.  The trails overlook the broad valley of Lower Wodehouse Creek, shown here.  Unfortunately it was not the best weather, with those clouds rolling across the sky as fast as they could go, propelled by a biting Arctic wind!  The tracks were also obliterated by the blowing snow.  I didn't last long on day one.

The next day I headed for the Glenelg Trails, and found the tracks freshly used, and easy to ski.  I didn't even get out of breath skiing these trails through the woods, partly deciduous forest and partly reforested White Pine.

At one point you come out to this beautiful row of old Sugar Maples along the edge of a farm field, and shortly after you cross one of the Klondyke Snowmobile Trails.

Then it's down my favourite trail, the 'Long Piney Woods Trail', through the planted pines all the way to the end.

The trail ends up heading back out to the road passing the landowner's beehives, all wrapped up for the winter.

At the end of the week I headed out to yet another spot, a private trail up near Meaford.  It was fun too, but they had had what seemed like 12" of fresh powder snow overnight, so it was a little slower that we liked.  Thank goodness another pair of skiers (who it turned we knew), had kindly broken trail for us!

A good start to the rest of the winter!

  4. Great news. go carefully. After Hugh's cardiac surgery with 2 stents, the one thing that was firmly told... Never push a car.. no matter how small, how dangerous the situation, NEVER push a car. But skiing, that would get your blood circulation up to full speed, well done,

  5. This is really good news, and I well remember how much I enjoyed cross country skiing in Colorado. I still have my old skis but they haven't been used here, since I've "graduated" to snowshoes in the High Country of Washington state. It's not the same champagne powder here, but Cascade concrete. I love your pictures, and I'm so happy for you that you are back on those skis. Thanks for the memories! :-)

  7. Good for you! What a great way to stay in shape and recover from cardiac surgery. I used to cross country ski, and loved it. If I live in cold country, I would still be doing it!
