Today is National Flag of Canada Day. The familiar red and white Canadian flag was introduced in 1965 after contentious debate in the House of Commons. It replaced the Red Ensign, a flag featuring the British Union Jack in the corner, and the coat of arms of Canada. It's a widely recognized flag today.
This was taken at Big Bay, on one of our excursions ten years ago. I just really liked the flag flapping in the wind over Georgian Bay. It was at the end of the Big Bay dock, on the famous Big Bay beach.
Yes, Big Bay is indeed the stone skipping capital of Canada. That beach is not sand, but shingle, all round flat stones, perfect for skipping, which of course we did.
It's hard to be unaware of how directly Donald Trump is insulting Canada with his threats of tariffs and making us the 51st state. Trump has pissed off so many Canadians that there are more patriotic flag posts on Facebook here than anything else. I fear that many Canadians will no longer feel friendly to the U.S., which is a shame.
But the unintended result has been a wave of patriotism sweeping the country. Like most other Canadians I'm proud of our great country and a little frightened that Trump will not in fact back off.
We've carved a much gentler society next to the capitalistic giant.
ReplyDeleteSkipping stones, my Gran told me she played them in the Clyde, when she lived near Glasgow. They called them Chucky Stones then . Fly the flag proudly, and be sure that D T will not win his battle, you Canadians are so strong and will band together nationwide.
ReplyDeleteI've skipped many a stone in my day. :)
ReplyDeleteAs a citizen of the U.S. I'm embarrassed. Canada has a beautiful flag and the best national anthem I've ever heard -- congratulations.
ReplyDeleteOur flag is beautiful indeed! We are also upset about what Trump is doing, wondering how we will be affected as travelers to the US. Americans here are not treating us any differently, which is good.
ReplyDeleteMay it proudly, forever fly.
ReplyDeleteI love a flag flapping. There were some wonderful, very noisy, flags when we visited the Canadian war memorial in northern France last year.
ReplyDeleteCanadians are feeling threatened! Unbelievable when you consider the history between our two nations. Not unbelievable when you consider the source.
ReplyDeletePlease know that millions of Americans stand with you and are equally outraged. I live in Oregon, a blue state, and can only wonder what our punishment will be under the regime of this madman.
ReplyDeleteHappy Flag Day! We were discussing this at Happy Hour last evening, and the impact the current threats are having on the lives of so many. I suspect, that there will be resistance here in the States that will keep the administration busy. Or at least I hope so.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a time. Canadians are coming together. Some of them. Sadly many Cons are touting the great things happening in the U.S. It is awful.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flag! I am still your friend!
