Our Planter Boxes are Doing Great!

If you've read the past couple of months of this blog you'll remember the planter boxes we had made, filled with potting soil and got ready to use.  Well today, less than three weeks after being planted, they are doing very well.

One of our planter boxes - there are some veggies coming up among all those flowers!  Three tomatoes and a struggling rose in pots, along with the pot of Lavender in the foreground.

This is the first little corner of one planter that I was assigned to plant, a row of lettuce and a row of beets,  The lettuce is flourishing.  We've already had salad of our own lettuce and onions.  Those are Marigtold leaves on the right and a Nasturtium in the front.

This is that patch today.  The beets are still under there, but I fear the Nasturtiums are taking over.  Everything is growing like mad!

And the larger planter that I worked on, the day I planted the Marigolds and herbs.

Today everything has grown and filled in.  Mrs. F.G. had transplanted tiny lettuces in between a lot of the other plants.  I snack on the onions at the end.  And yes that's my morning coffee.  I've been enjoying sitting out on the deck for an hour most mornings.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobel brought two long lines of severe thunderstorms across most of southern Ontario yesterday.  Apparently two tornadoes touched down briefly.  Here there were very strong wind gusts and heavy horizontal rain for 20 minutes.  Mrs. F.G. was of course well prepared with the candles and flashlights out in case of a power outage.  She thinks of everything!

Today the weather has changed abruptly.  The temperature dropped 25 degrees and it's quite cool.  Apparently we're in for a couple of cool days before warmer weather returns.  Lots of leaves and a few small branches blew down; garbage cans blew down the street.  But there's still lots of wind so the yard won't get raked til later.

Personally I'm pleased to be rid of the suffocating hot temperatures of yesterday!

  1. Your garden is doing well. Many of my plants broke off in the wind. I have to replace them if the cold wind ever stops.

  2. Looking good. Apparently you sent the wind and rain our way, we had a bit over two inches of rain last night.

  4. Those planter boxes, works of true carpentrymanship, and the plants, how quickly they have grown, and nothing can beat picking your own salad veges, love the red additions, the best variety to have.

  5. It is a beautiful day! Your planters are lovely.
"Phragmites" you are brilliant! Thank you for the name. I've been working on this as best I can. My right eye has cataracts and the left, if I read much, gets double vision. It's tough to read. We also have invasive frogbit in the pond. They aren't growing so much with the Phragmites.

  7. The planters look like there were a couple of green thumbs at work. Bet it felt good to get out and garden. Everything grows so fast and that makes one feel so good.

  10. Those plants are growing great...it is fun to watch plants grow. We had a cool, low humidity day yesterday and it felt wonderful. The wind blew hard all day for two days...not strong enough to blow down a lot of stuff but sure stronger than a breeze.

  12. I like the heat, a lot, but that humidty was oppressive so I'm glad for the relief. Can't there be a happy medium?? Good grief! From warmm clothes to cool ones.
Your planter gardens are absolutely gorgeous!! My lettuce is looking pretty pathetic, I'm hoping the rain does something to perk them up and spur them on.
