Tree Trimming

Our neighbours called in a tree surgeon to trim some trees out back.  I thought they were mainly trimming this tree that is a big part of the view out our window, but they had bigger ideas in mind.

I think tree surgeons must be frustrated little kids who loved tree climbing.  Can you spot the guy high among the leaves?

But this tree was the serious business, with a large branch extending out over the neighbour's deck.  They started by throwing a cord with a weight on it up over a higher limb, which they used to pull up a safety line.  Pulling on this, he practically ran up the tree and out onto the branch.

A closer look, with the safety rope he used to pull himself up, chainsaw hanging from his belt.

As he worked his way down the branch to a larger diameter, he tied a rope to it and his colleague lowered it down.  None of this just cutting off the whole branch and letting it fall!  Note how small the chainsaw is.

Here it goes, almost on the ground.

He adjusted himself with the safety rope and cut off the next to last piece.  Shouldering it, he directed its fall so it did no damage.

and then he rapelled down the tree in all of 5 seconds!

And this is the little tree they started with after they were done.  Comparing this to the first photo, I think they did a good job.  Add in all interesting entertainment for the morning.

  1. You're not far wrong about tree surgeons; a friend of mine used to spend much of his time rock climbing and mountaineering, a lifestyle which he funded by being a tree surgeon between trips.

  5. We have had many trees that had to be removed as they rotted and were dangerously close to falling . We use a company called The Tree Huggers down here and they are very good fast and safe with what they do and reasonably priced to , the guy who runs the company also is a Arborist and has a degree in Agriculture and Forestry they really know their stuff it was him that told us what kind of maple our big tree is a Manitoba maple and that it is over 150 years old . Lovely photos glad the guys there did a good job .

  10. we had to take down a beautiful oak. Made me so sad. But it was really diseased, was ready to take out my neighbor's house. When the gents came to work on it, the climber said, woah, there was so little left in the center of the tree he wouldn't climb it...he had to rent a cherry picker.

  11. Arborists possess a skill and fortitude that few others possess. The good ones deserve all the respect we can give them, the bad ones are a danger to themselves, others and the trees they butcher. Fortunately it looks like your neighbors found a good crew.

  12. Trees are lovely but sometimes they look nicer with a little trimming behind the ears just like humans! Bill and I both don't have a problem trimming lower branches, often in necessity, sometimes for beauty. That branch sure didn't look strong enough to hold a person but it must have been a treat to watch that! :) Free entertainment.

  14. This is a lost are in our area. I am always amazed at how good they do their jobs!! Our neighbor had a large tree fall from his side into the river. It cost him $7,000 to get it picked up and cut up and onto a barge. He is selling his house and the buyers insisted!

  15. Some good ole' boys out of Arkansas trimmed our trees after a major ice storm. The found a nest of squirrels but determined they were too small to have for supper. True story!
