Hummingbirds and Orioles

With the addition of a hummingbird feeder and some orange slices to our backyard menu. we now have both some Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and some Baltimore Orioles visiting.

We've seen as many as three Hummingbirds in the yard at once, though not all at the feeder.  We're almost more likely to see them perched in a tree, though we've rarely seen them perched anywhere previously.  They certainly perch on the feeder for a bit with every visit.

The male Orioles have got to be one of the most stunning birds we ever see.  And never before have we seen them up close as we are now. Usually they've been a distant bird in a tree.

We've seen two males and at least one female.  The female here has gentler colours, more yellow than orange, somewhat parallel to the difference in colours for the male and female Goldfinch.

Thanks for all your suggestions yesterday.  I'm working on it!

  1. I miss watching the birds at our feeder. Haven't put one up here in the woods because it will attract the bears! We do see all kinds of birds flying around though. I think some live in the natural fence I'm making.
    Enjoyed seeing your backyard birds.
    A happy day to you. : )

  4. Those feathered friends, and such colours. So good to have feeders where the birds come closer.

  6. Great pictures! You are getting better, it seems, at capturing the birds for viewing by your blog fans. :-)

  9. I saw my first goldfinch today but didn’t get a photo. I could see a humming bird darting in and out of my blue spruce tree so I did get my feeder out. I usually see goldfinches before any of my northerner friends but not this year. I like seeing the Oriole. It is a beautiful orange.

  10. I agree about those Baltimore Orioles being the most stunningly colorful birds in our yards. Pretty hard to beat those vibrant orange and black contrasting colors.
