Animals in the Yard

Yes, even though we live in town we have a few animals in the yard in addition to all our birds.  The squirrels must feel that this is the local squirrel restaurant, though our bird feeders remain successfully squirrel-proof.  We have both grey and Red Squirrels.  Then this spring the rabbits, eastern Cottontails, move in, carving out a home for themselves under the shed.  There's also a chipmunk around, though I haven't successfully caught a photo yet.

There are surprisingly fewer Grey Squirrels than last year, and we only saw one occasionally over the winter.  Never-the-less, you can count on one or two being around every day.

The little Red Squirrel seems to be here almost all the time.  Only half the size of the Greyn Squirrels. it can easily match them in scampering up a tree.

We saw the adult rabbit last year, but it was only about two weeks ago that we saw the family.

Here are two of them creeping out from under the shed.  We've seen as many as four.  Needless to say, the Head Gardener is not pleased!

  1. I have not seen our rabbit for a long time but as soon as I plant lettuce and radishes I see it rushing between me and my neighbor’s property. I do have screen fence that I can put around it, made by a former owner.I cleaned out a shed with a bucket full of baby mice. I don’t do well with them and the mother must have moved them as they are now gone.

  2. Like you I have noticed a decrease in our Squirrel population from last summer. For you the Gray Squirrels and for me the Black Squirrels. I think maybe the dreadfully cold winter took it's toll. We have a resident Rabbit as well which will probably be in it's glory when all this clover I'm planting begins to grow.

  3. Sorry I haven't commented on your blog for the last several posts, but I've been out of wifi range.

You might want to look at one of the superzoom cameras made by Canon or Nikon, they're lighter and less expensive than a DSLR and there's no need to change lenses to go from wide angle to telephoto (1000 mm equivalent or more). I've used a Canon SX50 for years and, although that model and the comparable Nikon are no longer produced, brand new ones can still be found on Ebay at reasonable prices.

  4. They are so cute to look at but like the head gardener we don't like the destruction of our Flowerbeds.

  5. I love the wee bunnies! But not if you are trying to grow a garden!

  6. We have few rabbits this year. The reason why: we had three bobcats living behind us! The dog was recently spooked. I went out to see what was going on and found that three bobcats, a mother and her babies, now fully grown, were living under a deck just behind out house. Yikes!

  7. my yard has so many squirrels but the husband has been able to squirrel proof all of the feeders with much success. it was them vs him for the longest time but he finally won!! i have bunnies under my deck and they are making lots more bunnies. nor matter that they are a nuisance, they are still fun to watch!!

your grass looks nice and green!!!

  8. Bunnies! They are cute, but they sure can decimate a garden in a hurry. Such nice critters, though. :-)

  11. I'm still feeding turkey's across the front field. (I took the feeders down on the deck because I don't want the mess now). There is quite a collection of squirrels and chipmunks hanging out with the turkeys and bluejays. Thank goodness we don't have those aggressive black squirrels here.
