Signs of Fall

Running out of topics to blog about, but then I headed outside in late afternoon to find there was a definite chill in the air.  I had to hold on to my hat in the cold breeze.  I've never thought fall started on the fall solstice.  It really starts in August in my mind, even though October is the 'fall colour' month.  And fall is in the air.

There are a lot of signs of fall already.

A lot of our summer birds have already vanished, and they stopped nesting long ago.

There aren't many flowers in the gardens here, but those that are here are starting to fade.  The bright yellow Yarrow are turning brown.

There's been a great harvest of tomatoes from the raised bed gardens, as well as a few other veggies.

The wasps now come to bother you if you're eating or drinking outside, but not many mosqitoes left.

The days are shorter and the evenings cooler.

So we're getting into early fall, one of 12 seasons I think of around here.

  1. It's just a bit cooler here and I have seen some color in the leaves but it still seems like summer to me. Our summers aren't very hot anyway.

  3. You and I are of the same mind regarding the timing of the seasons, I much prefer the meteorological seasons (beginning September 1, December 1, March1 and June 1) to the astronomical seasons that are correlated with the solstices and equinoxes. Signs of fall are coming at a fast and furious rate now with some leaves beginning to turn and most of the warblers already gone from the woodlands.

  4. Down here a lot warmer, today I had to dispense with a merino top, just TOO hot to wear. Fall, we call it Autumn, and as your leave turn orange, then brown and fall, I see small shoots on the Japanese Maple tree today. The tulip shoots are up about 3 inches, earlicheer or Jonquils are out, their smell is overpowering inside. I wonder if your wheelchair is like Hugh's mobility scooter, that has a battery, and he plugs in a lead to a connection up by the front handles, to a 3 pin power point? From our place, he can go up to the shops and back easily. Mrs F.G. Fondest greetings to you as well.

  5. We have brush in the woods turning color and acorns are falling out of the trees. Fall is in the air with chilly mornings. What ever you have to say is interesting:)

  6. I've noticed over the years Autumn begins to make it's early presence felt about the middle of August. The subtle signs for me are the emergence of chirping Crickets. A few at first and within a short time it's a crescendo. Less daylight, cooler nights with heavy dew in the mornings. Weather begins to shift and there is definitely a different feeling in the air and for some of us it's a good feeling. Summer is slowly leaving and the beautiful Fall weather is approaching. Better shake out those warmer clothes Stew, Autumn's mystique is coming to wrap you in it's beauty.

  7. We got our first rain since June today. It was light but enough to get the streets wet and slick from all the emissions stuck to the surface over the summer. I know my garden will love it, but I won't see what has happened during my two week absence until Wednesday. I hope I have a few tomatoes that haven't gotten too ripe. I want to can a few more for winter. - Margy

  8. It's turned unseasonably colder here now after the unusually hot temperatures of the last few weeks. In a normal year harvest work would still be in progress - I remember one year in my youth when we'd only just started at the end of August. Mid day temp here today 12 C or 54 F.

  9. Hello, our morning are cooler and lately less humid days. I was stung by a wasp recently, it is a painful and now itching sting. Be careful. Enjoy your day and new week ahead.

  10. I think fall is my favorite season, and yes we are having cooler weather and shorter days, too. Leaves are beginning to turn, just a little, and September starts next week! :-)

  11. Fall approaching used to put this sun worshiper in a funk when I was working. It meant winter followed soon after. As a child, of course, I loved all seasons because we were outdoors in it no matter what. As an adult, after my kids had grown, not so much. Now I find I can appreciate the 4 seasons even though winter has to be warm in Arizona for me to enjoy it. :) Cheating a bit, yes but I don't enjoy being cold.

    Can't wait for winter!!

  13. We've had a rainy day in my part of the UK - and it's been a lot cooler too.
I think Autumn (The Fall) is just around the corner.

    All the best Jan

  14. The dry conditions here have stressed the plants so they look fall-like, but the temp went back up again today.

  15. I have seen the first odd tree here and there with fall colours.

  16. Autumn has started here in North London (UK). About 10 days ago I noticed that the air felt softer and the evenings are definitely drawing in. I haven't smelled autumn yet - it has a very distinct smell - but no doubt that will come soon.
It is off course considerably cooler now. The heatwave we had from May to mid August has gone and we now have a normal UK summer. Which can be freezing! Dark too! How we are missing the bright sunshine and blue skies.

  17. We won't see fall here in Tampa until November. Sigh.
