Spring Wildflowers

We continue to have warm days, and the spring wildflowers are bursting into bloom fast.  It's hard to keep my postings up-to-date with what's actually happening in the woods!  It's my favourite time of year.

The Dog-Toothed Violets or Trout Lilies are now blooming.  Three days ago it was only the leaves, but now the bright yellow flowers are out.

Perhaps my favourite early spring wildflower.

Trilliums are unfolding, the red ones a little ahead of the white ones.  I always think the Red Trilliums look best if you catch the sun shining through the leaves.

The Blue Cohosh is the strangest spring wildflower going.  It's a real purple colour when it emerges from the ground, and grows so fast that I think if you sat for a day and watched it, you could see it grow!  This was one week ago; today this would be entirely unfolded, 18" tall, and green.

Likewise these bloodroot, here just emerging a few days ago, the blossoms still folded and wrapped in the leaves.

And the Hepatica are one of the earliest; they will be fading soon.

  6. Nice set of pictures - I have a different problem here - I can hardly keep up with the volume of leaves that are falling!

  7. Those Trilliums are very pretty, but I think the Blue Cohosh is my favorite. We have something similar here in western Washington that grows that fast too, but it's not as pretty.
BTW, I have a Macro Monday Mixer if you'd like to come link up. Would love to have you! http://allthevs.com/macro-monday-mixer-2/

  17. thank you so much. I did not try to ID Blue Cohosh, just thought it would be hard to discover. It is a bit of a drive back to where i found it, but i think you have inspired me to make the drive. It is at the base of some gigantic falls that are lovely to sit at the base of.

I have never seen red trilliums, i have seen pink and tons of white and they are blooming now. so beautiful.
I have never seen the bloodroot either. so beautiful. such a joy to see all your photos. thanks again.
