Winter Shadows

Driving around during those rare sunny hours, I really notice the shadows on the snow.  Usually it's trees that catch my attention, but sometimes it's other things - like this short snowman made by our grandson when they visited - now buried under another 18" of snow or so!  Just a round bump sticking up out of the drifts on our deck.

The deck is my biggest challenge to keep clear of snow; I think I'm going to abandon the attempt and just let it accumulate!

I think the pattern of shadows on the snow is a unique signature of the forest they represent.

These two pictures were taken a month ago, when we were still headed for a green Christmas.  But the straight lines across the road are always striking.

And I think this is my favourite, a big old maple shadow reaching across the field.

The cold weather broke today, rising 10° in about 4 hours.  You might be surprised at what a difference there is between -15°C and -5°C when you're out walking.  Now it's almost 'warm'!  Good walking weather.  And have you noticed the longer days yet?  Daylight lasts a good half hour longer here, a change from 4.30 to 5 p.m. before it's started to get dark.

  2. For us, we are gaining almost two minutes every single day in daylight! It might take another week before I notice it walking to the bus in the morning, but we are past those really REALLY dark days. Love the pictures of the shadows on the snow. :-)

  3. I like these shadows on the snow and the maple tree is my favourite too, but the one of the straight tree shadows across the road is second. I am noticing the longer days and also the movement of the sunset on the horizon. Makes me happy.

  4. Shadows on snow are beautiful. I'm reminded with that shot of the deck of last winter, seeing park benches completely buried in snow.

  7. Lines and shadows, stunning, And guess what, down here I had to put the light on for breakfast yesterday, it is already getting darker every morning. Still hot though, garden work in the midday sun is not for me.

  8. That's some amount of snow you have. There's something a little surreal about the first photo - love the one of the forest.
