Trees and Fences

I've been out driving around and trying to get some shots of fall colour that are more than just close-ups of the brightest trees.  But I'm finding it's a lot harder than you think to find 'landscape' shots where the fall colour shows up well.  Here are a few of my efforts.

This is the sort of classic 'landscape' shot I'm trying to get - a nice fence and maple tree in the foreground to frame the picture, and an interesting barn (preferably painted red) in the background.   But I was a little too quick, and didn't line it up as carefully as I should have.  Views like this are very few and far between, even though you always hope to find them around the next corner.

The most common 'landscape' shots I can find with nice colourful trees are along the side (or both sides) of a road.  And these trees were particularly bright.

And here's another example, though the sky isn't co-operating as much here, slightly cloudy.

When I took this two weeks ago I didn't think much of it, but looking back, I think it's perhaps one of my best 'landscape' efforts this fall.  Shooting on a sharp angle as I did brings the fence posts closer together, and adds a strong element of interest across the front of the shot, along with the old barn.

And talking about fences, we took a drive up the Bruce Peninsula last weekend, about 2 hours north.  We were enjoying watching the farms and forests on the back road we drove home, when suddenly we realized that these dark beasts weren't cattle, but buffalo!  Not many buffalo herds here in Ontario!

Several fences in these pix, so I'll link to 'Good Fences':

  1. Absolutely lovely pictures, FG....I love the fall colors, the fences are neat and tidy, and the buffalo! What can I say.

  2. These photos are beautiful and the trees are really full of colour. I like the first and 4th ones a lot. It is difficult to get the 'right' shot and include a barn or farm or something of interest. You did a great job on these.

  3. There was a herd of bison down around Rattlesnake Point on the escarpment when I was growing up. I have no idea if they're still there.

  4. The fence, the barn, and those leaves, I agree. And buffalo, are they farmed? for meat? for grazing? for anything? I am intrigued. and lovely photo. Cheers,Jean.

    1. I assume the buffalo are farmed and sold for the meat - probably to high-end restaurants.

  5. I agree: that fourth shot works very well indeed. The fall colours though are beautiful in all the pictures and sufficient in themselves to warrant a picture. Does the sun never stop shining in Ontario?

    1. Yes, we've had lots of dark clouds and rainy weather. Yesterday I thought the clouds looked like snow clouds they were so dark. But one thing I've learned about getting good photos is to get out there while the sun shines! I guess it ends up being a biased view of the weather here. I'll try to find some dark clouds for you.

  6. I love it when a landscape picture also has good color. It is hard to get the brightness of the trees included with the longer view. Nice job!

  8. Looks like wherever you are in Canada. The scenery is similar. The first one looks like a pix I took on my way back from Lindsay, Ontario, Canada. yes the best time for leaves is the sun on them.

  15. Agreed, the fourth photo is my favorite -- the old building and the composition make it very good. The bison were a good find, things like that add to a day's pleasure.
