Reflections in the River

We hiked into Indian Falls the other day, the last of the better known waterfalls in the area that I haven't been to see since retiring here.  My memory of it was of a smaller falls, but it was twice as big as I remembered (from 40 years ago), and flowing very full after all our rain - more of that tomorrow. But along the side of the river we also saw some interesting reflections.

The river was flowing far too fast for reflections, but in this little eddy where the ripples were gently washing in around the corner, there were interesting wiggly tree trunk reflections!

This is Indian Falls, our destination.  It's the classic example of a waterfalls over the lower two layers of the Niagara Escarpment bedrock.  Tell you more tomorrow.

But we had to walk 20 minutes up the trail beside the river to get there, and at this spot there was a bit of a quiet eddy beside the fast-flowing stream.

This was the reflection we first noticed, in that eddy beside the river.

But these are the two interesting photos for me.  I always keep a filter on the front of my camera lens to protect the lens, and as usual I had my polarizing filter on.  This was the first shot.

And this was the second shot, exactly the same shot, but turning the front of the polarizing filter 90°, to cut out the glare and show the bottom through the water, almost eliminating the reflection.  This was just an experiment, but you learn something new every day.  Different settings for different purposes.

One more shot of the wiggly tree reflection.

  1. There's been plenty of rain this autumn, so the falls are putting on quite a show.

  4. The reflections, the fallen leaves, the shimmering water: all create the feel of the environment superbly. And what a classic waterfall - and one which allows you to see it in its full glory.

  11. I meant to mention that I am now well armed with the excellent fern book you recommended. It was picked at the book store in Owen Sound and hand delivered by the president of the Own Sound Club.

  12. Nifty difference in the filtered pictures. I have to shift my position to get the effects.
